    white smoke

Wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on this white smoke.

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GNBhuSj_hU[/ame]

    300tdi, vid is cold start.

    So far:

    • replaced injectors with good spares, new copper washers.
    • moved timing from retarded to spot on to advanced and to more advanced.
    • replaced fuel return pipes on injectors
    • checked all unions for leaks, none there...

Could it be residual engine oil in the exhaust from the turbo leaking engine oil out the exhaust turbine?

Negative, smells like diesel/oil & confusing me between the two. No coolant smell to it and it does not dissipate like moisture would and the smoke particulates seem to hang and move off with the wind.

I have an oil leak from the turbo, dumping engine oil into the exhaust so I am very much hoping its that but I have no idea if its possible for it to smoke that much just from oil...

Missed the leaky Turbo bit. When I had the Irishman here, he had the same problem, it was blowing grey smoke, ended up being the Turbo. Had to remove all the intake/inter cooler system and clean all the oil out. Then fix the turbo

Looks like incomplete combustion on one cylinder to me. Unburnt fuel = white smoke. have you checked the valve clearances? Hopefully its as simple as that and not a valve/ seat or ring problem.

It has 4 new glow plugs in it as well.

previous to the turbo/oil issue it would do it for about a KM.

The head is only 25000km old (AMC brand) so shouldn't be a seating issue.

I checked the clearances cold after I had the rocker gear out checking the valves/stems. The engine was cold by the time I got to checking the clearances but they were all ~1 thou tight.

Rings aren't out of the question in my mind so a compression check is in order...
