LT230Q (Quiet gears) as in late discos, just as same ratio as disco. Yes they have taper roller bearings on intermediate gears, but designated after the Q gears.

Edit: Not necessary to remove the input gear, that is something that is only possible with certain ratios

Edit 2: When I said late discos in first line, I meant late disco I. IIRC the 'Q' transfer case was first used when the they did the update/facelift.

From what I have heard, not having personal experience, the Puma drive train is angled down further (or raised at the the front?) compared to other Landies.

The consequence is less oil in the transfer case if filled to the level plug. I understand that oil should be filled above the level plug, so I assume that means using a measured quantity fill quantity and filling from somewhere above the level plug (possibly the port for temperature sensor on left side, this sensor is not always fitted, and plugged instead). AFAIK the level plug is where it has always been, when the LT230 was not tilted back like in Pumas.

The LT230 has been fairly reliable in all other applications, but Pumas seem to have warranty repairs replacement due to bearing problems (often front output shaft).

Loss of pre-load is most likely due to bearing wear.

Worn bearings in a gearbox allow mating gears to move out of proper alignment and the tooth load instead of being distributed along the full width it is concentrated at one end. The chipped teeth could be a result of the misalignment.

Given the above, if I had a Puma, which I don't, one of the first things I would consider is a sump for the LT230. These increase the quantity of oil and should keep the oil temperature under control. I would also overfill, i.e. above the level plug.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, hope that is some help.

Lack of preload on the intermediate shaft will have caused the loose shaft to elongate the hole in the case and leak.

Fix is to machine and press in a steel collar for the shaft to run in.

As for the oil quantity in the LT on a Puma. The specificed capacity is 2.3l

The case is rotated around further but ime this means that you can get more than 2.3l in it. Whether this is a good thing or not who knows. The manual states to use the specified amount.

Landy done a lot of off road +towing fully pact for holidays. Was looking to rebuild transfer case around 200,000km guesses are hole is elongated dont have accurate measuring equipment at home.Wear on high range gear is a worry where dog clutch runs hoping its due to heavy loads expearinced.I use truck for its intended purpose.Hoping some permatex around shaft new orings reset preload will get me though a further 90 000 km .Also has some chipping around input gear.
