Someone on the forum ordered a Puma 2.2 and had diff locks dealer fitted. Not the cheapest, but it is covered by warranty.
I will have to drive one this week.

Hi All,
The wife went and took a test drive of the new Puma defender. She wants something that is a little more comfortable (electric windows, central locking and a dash) than the 2001 TD5 that we currently have. tbh I was really impressed with how far the defender had come along from the current one.
The first thing that I noticed was that I missed the louvres under the front windscreen, it also seemed significantly quieter when compared to the Td5.. is that for real as I didn't get up to motorway speeds.
On the Td5 I have maxidrive real locker, snorkel, 2 x long range tanks, drawer, cage, winch, bullbar, lights, 3 batteries, slightly lifted suspension and airbags in the rear. all the usual under body protection (diff guards, steering etc) has been superb and I still love it.
What would the baseline modifications be for the new Puma to be considered "safe" offroad?.. I have heard that putting an in-line fuel filter in is critical because the engines are much more susceptible to water damage?
Off the top of my head the minimum that I was thinking would be
- diff and steering guards
- rock sliders/steps that are tough and don't ruin the ground clearance
- bullbar
- second battery (fridge)
- some good driving lights
Is the standard alternator good enough to drive some good lights on the Puma?
Have I missed anything?
My guess is that putting lockers in would break the warranty? does it break the entire warranty or just the diffs/drive line? I have never bought a car that is new so it is all a green fields.. any advice would be really appreciated.

I'm in thinking mode ...... So drove a pre-loved 2010 90 with 50,000kms on it .
Was fine , bit noisey and went well , city/suburban speeds .
The comment was passed that 'it's better than I expected'
Then I drove a 2014 110 with 200 kms on it - what difference !
Quieter , smoother - like a new car .... Nah only kidding : )
So , the problem is can I wait till April for a new build ?
At this point I'm still deciding then negotiating I guess - I know what I want , colour and option and truthfully it will prob be the last new car I buy .
So brains trust , which one 90 or 110 ?
No kids , have dogs , have small caravan ( 1960's model) and a camper will be going touring , any suggestions gratefully received
I took an 05 defender for a drive before I bought my 12 puma new, and I recon it was definitely quieter. I recon it's the vents at the front being sealed that does it.
Min to be safe "Offroad"? That's a pretty open question, Like any defender it's pretty good stock. I put a snorkel on mine as I used to encounter a bit of water and a bull bar because I was in Roo territory a lot. First 3 months I hit 9. Had no problem on Fraser the couple of times I took it stock, and it was soft sand at the time. Went over both back routes around Nygla rocks. The guy in the V8 land cruiser with lockers, that was ahead of me was pretty impressed, enough to grunt approval anyway. The TC in the Puma is much better than the TC that was in my 99 D2, and way above the TC in the ford ranger. Which you have to turn off in sand.
Don't know about the filter but I have got fuel from a lot of small places in north western NSW and not had any problems.
I've got 2 x 7" light force 55w HID's, with these on, high beam, radio, AC and the fan on high, the voltage from the alternator does not shift from the 14.6 shown on the Ultragauge. We did a rough test one night onsite (cause there was NOTHING else to do) and over and above, the above, I recon there is at least 15 amps.
Lockers will only break the drive train warranty ( I checked), I've put an Ashcroft ATB in the rear and will do the front when the piggy bank gets a bit more in it.
If I were you I would take any extras that would fit the Puma off the TD5, you get nothing for them when you sell the vehicle and they are pretty pricey to re-kit.
Cheers Glen

Where I tend to go offroad driving frequently it is rocky with a clay base. On the TD5 the traction control is not enough if it's even mildly showered. I do not know what the TC is like on the Puma, but from what you say it sounds like it maybe good enough.
The context of "safe offroad" is:
We regularly go to a property near Bulahdelah which is only accessible via a steep old logging trail up onto a ridge line. It is a clay base with large loose rocks and swales/erosion. Past experience in the wet has shown me that lockers make it much safer. Low range 1st or 2nd and trundle up no problems with just the rear locker. If I rely purely on TC in that same situation it will tend to lose traction and require an emergency decent back down the hill to start again.
Ive been through a td5 a 2.4 and now a 2.2. For me there was little difference in noise td5 to 2.4. I disliked the sound of the 2.4. But the post 2012 2.2 is miles better noise and vibration than any prevous defender I have had.
Post 2012 I believe also has a different etc traction tune so behaves a little better than the older models. Still once you have driven with multiple difflocks I think it would hard to just trust etc.

I would tend to agree that TC is not the best for large rocks and a locker is the better option. Aside from that I would assume that the TC on the TD5 defender would have been similar if not the same as the TC on the D2, if it is the same then the TC on the Puma is a lot better. I've recently taken the deefer on a track that has a lot of rocks about the size of your fist. The D2 always struggled with centre diff lock and the TC but the Puma just breezed it in. I am going for ATB's as most of the stuff I do is sand and loose gravel.
