The V8 is reliable - without the slipped liner issues of some later V8s. But the vehicle is nearly thirty years old, and you don't know how it has been treated. The V8 is subject to camshaft wear if oil changes are skimped, and you can expect to need carburetter overhauls etc by now, if not a compete overhaul. But is the V8 a suitable engine for an expedition vehicle anyway, on the grounds of fuel consumption anyway? You probably want a diesel.
From 1983 - 1990, the only 110s sold in Australia were the V8s and Isuzu engined diesels. None were sold in 1991-2, and then the Defender with the 200Tdi engine was sold, followed by the 300 Tdi and then the TD5 and since 2007 the TDci.
