Specialist insurance for my Land Rover

    Hi fellas

I'm sure this has been done before -so forgive if I'm covering old ground.

Now that the Land Rover 90 110 and 130 is shortly to end production, our current vehicles will not be easy to replace (if lost) with an equivalent new model.

I have examined my insurance policy carefully. Assuming major damage to the vehicle that renders it (in the view of the insurance assessors) economically unrepairable, it will be written off and sold at auction or for scrap. I -as many of us- do not see Hector as a white good on wheels to be written off as one might casually discard a Navarra or Hilux.

Even if it was deemed 'unecomomic' to repair I would like to hang onto my Land Rover and get him back on the road. Especially if the payout is not going to buy me a replacement (because there won't be any!)

So can anybody recommend an insurer who might take this view -perhaps Shannons or a specialty/classic/vintage insurer? I am currently with Territory Insurance (TIO), so expect specialty Insurance likely to cost a bit more, but hopefully not too much.

Recommendations for a good specialty insurer? Has anybody else thought about this?

    Cheers

    Alan

Its a tricky one and you will find it very hard for an insurance company to give you your written off defender. I asked a similar thing for an ED XR6 ive restored and modified its insured with shannons at a grate price considering no one else would touch it. The answer I got when asked if I could have my wreck if it was ever written off was since its not a classic ( so over 30 years ) its not offered.

they did say I would be given first option to buy it back before it goes to auction so that is something so would say the defender i have insured with them would be the same.

I am insured with APIA and I think they will let you buy back your wreck.
    Will have to check.

    Just checked.
APIA say that you can choose to keep your car after a total loss and they will deduct the salvage value determined by them.

Yeah Shannons do the same only prob with this is they will most probably put top dollar on it what they might get from auction so could be cheaper to let it go and buy it back at auction

If you happen to know where and when its being auctioned. Even then it may go for MORE. It's a risk.

I've just been through this with Shannons. I bought back my 95 "statutory write off' (aka uneconomic to repair) Defender 130 for their 'value' of $6,500. With the (too small) balance of the policy I will be able to fix it up to as good as it was. I think Shannons would have been better off just paying this one.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
