I run EP85--140 oil in the TC as well as the diffs and as you can imagine the TC runs fairly warm As long as the oil is not showing a burnt colour I am not too concerned as the oil recommended for hotter conditions

Is that a theoretical 180 on gearing and rpm or have you done it ?

IMHO I think your speed vs the conditions was the main cause of the higher temps in the transfer case. The air flow through the transmission/transfer case isn't the best - I think I could safely say that all of us have issues in the hotter temps/summer.

I know with my old girl that dropping the speed down to 95km/h makes a world of difference to temps, and I don't feel like I'm constantly pushing it.

In regards to gearing, I changed my high range gears to the Disco set. It generally works well, but there are limitations:
    1. Taking off on hill starts when towing means you need to slip the clutch more; and
    2. 5th gear is quite tall - works well when cruising on the flat or downhill, but add a climb or a decent headwind and you end up in 4th very quickly. Only advantage is she'll hold 100km/h in 4th without undue stress.

    Cheers
    Chris

I don't want to use a Disco transfer due to it making 1st gear too high
AM was thinking of running both ODs yes
The TD5 has a VNT and is pretty highly tuned I don't think it would struggle unless you were towing or had big hills
It will wind out to over the old ton quite easily.

Will use some fuel though if you go too hard

You can modify the R380 5th gear by using a D2 V8 gear this will bring the ratio to .73 instead of .77
    Minimal difference

Your TD5 might be well tuned and go really well mainly for one reason that being gearing You use double overdrive you will kill the performance as well as 5th in the R380 I thought your main concern was heat in the TC Any way best of luck if you try it people have been putting **** on my ideas for the last 50 years but most worked out

AM thanks I think your ideas are good I just don't have the facilities or the time where I live

If you read my original post I think I was concluding that this is a dumb idea
Sometimes it would be nice to pick up a bit of economy but I guess it takes energy to push a shed through the air

What makes you think 98 degree's is too hot?,look up the oil specs and you'll find it's well within it's operating range, like AM I also run 90/140. Pat

No one said it was too hot if you read the post it is referring to the requirement by Roamerdrive to keep the temps below 110 degrees C
Hence giving little leaway for additional heat
Have thought about using 85/140 in fact even bought the oil just isn't in there yet
