Yes they would if they resurrected the lt95 instead of using a Ford box

    Hi Everyone,

Just a note on an old thread - loose prop shaft nuts

I too have had that dreaded gear change clonk get worse lately (even with really careful gear changes).

After doing lots of reading on here and other sites I took my 2012 110 (43000km) over to my brothers last weekend to check the grease (for the first time) the wheel drive flanges.

3/4 were good. 1 was dry with some rusty dust in the plastic cap.

Whilst the wheel was off the ground we gave it a turn to see if there was movement in other parts of the drive train and to our surprise the front prop shaft nuts were loose on the transfer case and rear prop shaft nuts were loose on the hand brake drum - one nut was turned a full turn to get it tight. Result 90% less clonk. I guess they weren't properly tightened at the factory and have gradually worked loose.
Next will be taking the PTO cover off and checking the gear box main shaft and transfer case cog for wear.

    Kerry.

This is pretty common Kerry, if the propshafts are ever removed they should be refitted with new nyloc nuts. Nyloc nuts are a single-use item however most people just reinstall them and the result is no locking effect at all, they work loose just like a plain nut would.
Thanks for the reminder, I need to pick up some replacement nylocs for mine- had the transfer out a few weeks ago and the box of nylocs I had on hand (mystery box from a clearing sale) turned out to be the wrong size, so what did I do? Yep, put the old ones back on! Can anyone remind me what the nut size is?

Rather than post a new topic for it thought id post in here seeing as its related.
Has anyone with the newer puma's had these issues also. Mine is a 2015 130 and I have noticed alotof clunking in the lower gears. But was told its normal for the defenders.
I live in a rural area and my 130 spends 90% of its time on the dirt so cant afford for it to breakdown on me . My nearest dealer is 80klms from me. Really tempted to head in for a check up on the driveline now

Change the flanges to steel jobbies now, give them a grease every few months and you'll be fine. Pat

My 2013 Defender is going for a holiday at the dealer to have a probable rear main seal leak fixed. Not a bad leak, but the warranty is up in a few months.

I rang up today to book it in expecting a three week wait to get the car in for work. The service advisor asked me if I would like a loan car but I didn't need one. I nearly fell off my chair when they said to drop it in tomorrow!

I then mentioned the dry adaptor shaft problems experienced by some owners and asked if they could check the shaft for lubrication if they take the transmission assembly out. He said he thought that would be a good idea. Double happy!

I can drive my Defender without any clunking although I can induce it if I want to. Early on I marked the various components for "give" so I have a starting point to see if slop develops in the shafts etc.
