    BullBar, winch and springs!

    Help please!

I was considering fitting a TJM bulbar and a winch to my 110 but am hearing this also then requires uprating the front springs to cope with the extra weight...

Given a bullbar weighs about 50-70 kg and a winch about 35kg, this means an extra 85-105kg over the front axle... ie: the same weight as one well dressed middle aged man sitting on the bonnet!

Surely the standard suspension set-up should be able to handle that weight increase? I cannot even press down the front suspension when I lean on one front corner!

What is the collective view please! Is everyone modifying their suspension for these additions???

    Many thanks,

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

I've got a MY12 110 wagon with ARB bullbar and winch with synthetic rope. Haven't noticed any dip in the nose. I'm not saying it hasn't dipped but if it has it is very subtle. I haven't felt the need to change from the factory suspension. No change to handling. In the long run I'm sure the extra weight would make a difference to the suspension's longevity but the car will out of warranty by then and I will be looking at a suspension upgrade all round.

    Regards,

    Danial.

    Pete,

Land Rover recommends their HD springs for your vehicle if you fit a winch, which is basically up-rated OEM springs and is ussually included in their exorbitant price for "factory fitting" the option before delivery.

That said, my 90 has had a full Frontrunner winch bar and Warn XD9000 fitted on the original front springs for the past 4.5 years with no issues. I had the whole lot off about 8 weeks ago and the measured difference on and off is only 12mm measured to the underside of the dumb-irons.

I do however run synthetic line which saves you a good number of kilograms as well.

So, my opinion is that you'll be OK for the time being or until the modification bug makes you install a "modest" lift!

    Cheers,

    Lou

I have an ARB bullbar and winch and a apart from noticing it sag a little, I didnt really notice any negative side effects until I was driving all over Fraser when the tracks were rough. It continually bottomed out forcing me to go as slow as possible which wasnt helpfull in sand. Im going to put the HD springs on as soon as I get the coin.

ARB Bar, 12000 pound winch, synthetic rope on standard 130 springs brought the front down 12mm on mine. Still drives exactly the same.

You probably wont notice any difference in ride height with the addition of a bullbar and winch. Even for a fair while.
On my old 110, the front sagged significantly, but she was pretty old (1994-ish) so I replaced the fronts with 130 fronts, they were cheap-as from TR Spares in Padstow NSW and only took me a couple of hours to put them in.

Also, it's best to put your bullbar and winch etc on first, then play with any lift/springs after that. Don't over-estimate the weight you carry either or you may just end up with rock-hard springs!

I grabbed the tape out today after remembering this thread for todays little start on my set up.
    The unit is a stock 2011, 110 wagon @100,00km.
First was to fit the TJM winch bar.
Temporarily mounted the TJM 12,000Lb winch with synthetic rope.
Drop of 7mm measured hub centre to flare.
I'll wait till it gets saggy before I think about a spring upgrade.
As I'll be towing for trips I'd expect the rear to be an issue for me first though.

    Cheers, Kyle.
