    Daytime Running Lights

Has anyone fitted daytime running lights to their Defender? I remember seeing something months ago but can't find it. Could they also be used to enhance the low beam?

Wouldn't they enhance high beam on a Defender?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

When you have your lights on low beam - DRLs are off (as the D in DRL stands for "Daytime".

If you install them yourself, surely you could wire them how you want. So many cars have them and weird shaped headlights these days I thought it might be cheaper than speaker type headlights.

A bit from RACQ about DRLs.

    Quote

Daytime running lights (DRL) are purpose specific white lights fitted
to the front of vehicles. Their function is to make the vehicle more
conspicuous against its background at times when headlights are not
    typically used.

For original equipment installations, (i.e. new vehicles) DRLs must switch on
automatically when the vehicle starts and may stay on while the ignition is switched on.

However for aftermarket installations Queensland legislation requires that they be off when headlights are lit.

The following extract from Queensland's Traffic Operations Road Use Management -
Vehicle Standards and Safety Regulation 2012 outlines DRL operational and installation
    requirements.
    Daytime running lights
    1. A pair of daytime running lights may be fitted to a motor vehicle.
    2. A pair of daytime running lights fitted to a motor vehicle with 4 or
more wheels must be fitted with the centre of each light:
    (a) at least 600mm from the centre of the other light; and
    (b) not over 510mm from the nearer side of the vehicle.
    3. However, a pair of daytime running lights fitted to a motor vehicle
under 1300mm wide may be fitted with the centre of each light not
under 400mm from the centre of the other light.
    4. When on, a daytime running light must:
    (a) show a white or yellow light visible from the front of the vehicle;
    and
    (b) not use over 25W

Daytime running lights must be wired so they are off when a headlight, other than a headlight being used as a flashing signal, is on..

A number of automotive electrical equipment manufacturers offer DRL kits for
retrofitting. Look for kits that comply with ADR 76/00 or ECE R87.

For sure, but is not legal - DRLS at night just blind people just like fog ****** lights do.

I would love to know the logic on this rule and I can really see the mechanic getting out the multimeter to check this in a roadworthy.

Are you thinking of the light option on a rijidij winch bar.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

One of the UK suppliers had small LED lights in the rear view mirror covers that looked really good. Pat
