Bit of useless information but for those interested...

We all know that Land Rovers are aluminium due to surplus aircraft skin aluminium, but its not that well known that the original paint schemes (which have been reincarnated in some of the latest colors) were also war surplus.

I give you below 2 pictures of Spitfire cockpits... :-)

    Cheers,

Both 'facts' denied by Arthur Goddard who worked on the development of the original Land Rover.
The pale green he claimed came from the Rover car range and the aluminium wasn't an aircraft grade (I can't remember his exact comments).

    Hi Colin,

Interesting, thanks! Might do a bit of research on that

    Cheers,

    Lou

    Edit:

Land Rover's Official History list the grey green paint of the first vehicles as surplus cockpit paint... Something I'll have to refer to the official rivet counters in the UK! :-)

I think you'll find it was the shortage of steel rather than surplus aluminium was the original reason.

For what it is worth I agonised over my colour choice. I wanted black but wavered as I was worried about the heat etc. decision not helped by the fact the Defender looks good in a number of colours.

Anyway, at the penultimate moment I went back to my original choice of santorini black and I am so happy. Had some hot days in Perth already and no issue.

And I have to say, it looks better clean but it still looks awesome covered in dust and dirt!

I never wanted anything other than Keswick green.

Here's my DIY version of black pack.

I've just taken delivery of 110 in Keswick with white roof and Boost alloys. Love the colour. I usually stick with white Landy's and like to keep it simple but this one came up and I bought it unseen. Very happy.
