    Chassis repair

I have recently found a small hole in the chassis of my '96 110 where the crossmember attaches that supports the gearbox. This is the only rust in the chassis and there is none in the bulkhead, I just had a thorough look.

Upon doing some research I have noticed some people cut out the section with rust and weld in new material. Is this what I should do (the hole is about the size of a 50c coin)? Where can I get this done? Or should I consider trying to sell it and buy a new one (I would hate to do this as everything else is in awesome condition...)?

    Thanks,

    Dave

That's interesting, my brothers 96 110 has the same issue....

Replacing a section of chassis would be ideal although depending on how much rust is present and time and or funds you have it might be ok to do what my brother did, heavily treat and proof the rusted area and weld a length of 6x65mm(rough size, can't remember) flat bar on the underside of the chassis for a bit of security.
Probably not "ideal" but five years on and after a fair amount of heavy off-road it's still in one piece and there is no sign of cracking or any rust returning.

Comes down to what you plan for the car and what you will feel comfortable with really!

    Good luck

Cut out the affected area and make a new section from 3 mm sheet to weld in. Best to do it so you can grind back so it looks flush.

An easy job for any competent welder.
