It depends on which ladder and where they attach, some come down further than others.

This picture will give you an idea of the clearance, but let me know if you need more accurate measurements.

This type of ladder would fit, as long as it doesn't stick out too far at the bottom.

One that sits higher like this would be no problem, and the dual carrier bar can be used as a step.

I just measured the gap on my car so you can check for clearance. Approx 110mm from the panel to the jerry.

Some time ago i think you posted a picture of a 2nd spare being carried piggy back on the first spare. Is this a viable option with your carrier. I could imagine the stresses would be severe, especially on a corrugated road.

G'day Andy,
Yes, I make a piggy back mount, see the pic below.
At this stage they've only been fitted to the single carriers for the option to carry an extra spare occasionally.
You're right, it's extra stress on everything, but the first one I built has been on a Defender for a few years now with no issues, and it's seen lots of outback corrugations.
Because of the tube size they don't work with late model alloy wheels with the smaller centre hole, but Boost alloys and steel wheels are ok.
You can only use it with a late model alloy by using an older wheel as the extra spare mounted on the inside. The newer wheel will go on the outer studs.
