If your wedge bulbs are only 5mm wide you probably want some like these T5 bulbs:

    do you have Jaycar there?

they have a very extensive listing in their cattledog.

I went to local Jaycar hoping to change everything but my headlight bulbs and they had nothing in stock that I wanted.

wedge type bulbs seem easier to get than bayonets.

the led stoplight bulbs at autobarn were $50 ea......I don't want them that badly.

so I just bought a complete new set of incandescents from supercheap and replaced the lot with new.......and they keep giving me membership bonuses.....

How long is the one you pulled out. The 5SMD are 2.76cm long. I was looking at getting some of them, but I have not got any spare standard T10s floating around at present to measure and not going to pull out the old ones until I get some to replace.

I have tried the forward facing bulbs with a wide angle spread, even-though they fit well but the result is very bad, the emitted light doesn't flood the instrument.

I think you might well be right. The "forward facing" bulbs might work, but the ones with a bit of spread is usually too long.

Only way to find out would be to remove one and compare I suppose.

    A few types for reference...
