RAVE states 145 degrees max - warning light will illuminate (V8 Models).

An oil temperature switch is fitted to V8 engine models. In the event of the transfer box oil approaching maximum recommended working temperature of 145? C (293? F), the switch will close and a warning lamp in the instrument pack will be illuminated.

I've read that the increased capacity of the extended sump equates to a 10 degree cooler running temp. However, that could be a misnomer as the TC may be just absorb radiant from the gearbox.

If i understand the high temp switch it won't trigger until its predetermined temp (high) and for those people on the conservative side may want warning well in advance or with a gauge monitor fluctuations in temp and change driving style to suit the conditions.

In answer to Devans' question to me iPom covered it. i used a VDO sensor.

Clubagreenie - I recall a thread some time ago enquiring about the TFC temp range by a member that installed a Madman. If memory serves me correct the operating range he/she was recording was in the 70 to 80 degC range under normal driving conditions. The VDO range of gauges has a Gear Temp gauge that quotes 50 degC to 150 degC on the dial. VDO state that the sensor temp range is married to the max on the gauge dial.

Hi I'd go of the 150 degrees C sender, up to 100 degees won't be sufficient range IMV, given the potential for very hot weather in aussie. It's dammed hot down there, on my defender the floor can get too hot to leave you feet there on the bare metal. That's most of the "cooling " air on its way to the transfer case. 80 or 90 C would be OK, but if your towing or going up long hills or doing heavy sand work, ( where you not going very quickly but he engine is working hard) it's easy to imagine the temperature exceeding 100 deg C. sump extension is good idea more cooling area more volume.

I don't think mine had a temperature switc for the TC oil temperature.

It however also says:
