    Sunraysia 15x8" over stock 16 x 6.5?

Almost at the point where I need to purchase new tyres but before I do so, I was toying with the option of changing from the stock 16x6.5 rims to sunraysia 15x8" rims.
I've noticed a few people have done it and was wondering what have people thought about the change?
Obviously it should give me a lot more options when it comes to tyre section but I've also heard the argument that the slim tyres are better on sand etc.
Also should this be a straight change over or will it require extra work?
Sorry about the rookie questions, still learning...
    Thanks in advance,
    Dylan

    Dylan,

Staying with 16" rims you just end up with pretty large rolling diameter increases when you go wider due to the increase sidewall profile or aspect ratio.

The skinny vs wide tyre argument is that wider tyres give you no additional offroad advantage (regardless of the belief that wider gives you more surface area) and in some cases actually hinder you due to the build up in front of the tyre that needs to be overcome.

I personally prefer not exceeding 265, but there are quite a few guys perfectly happy on 285. That would basically be your decision point...

7" (standard Land Rover Alloy) is perfectly adequate for anything up to 265, but if you want to run 285 I'd imagine the 8" would be a better option. The down side is however limited options in brand, supplier and additional cost in making them fit the car (lifts etc).

    Cheers,

    Lou

Just watch the load ratings on 15 inch "Flotation" tyres. Many of the 10R15s etc do not have an adequate rating for a loaded Land Rover.

I remember some years ago someone had a series of tyre failures as his tyres were overloaded.

Personally I prefer 16 inch rims with 70/75 series tyres as a minimum say 265x75x16 which I believe is a standard Land Cruiser size with just about every tyre brand made in it.

    Hi Dylan,

Sorry mate, didn't look properly and thought you were after 16x8...

I personally don't like changing from 16 and the choice IMO would just be the width to suit your needs as per my original post.

    Cheers,

    Lou

    I put 15 x 7 on my 130 a few years back and am happy .
Tyres are cheap , had no overload problems & it's a fully loaded work & play ute , gearing is good for my purpose , it goes any where i take it .
    I use quality 31 10.5 15 tyres .
    Hope that helps .

ive got 15x8s on mine and have had for some time now.
Theres lots of different tyres for them with any load rating you could want
at the moment the load on the 33/12.5/15s is over a 1000kgs per tyre, so cant see a problem there.
Wide tyres in mud dont really work as you cant cut down to the hard stuff, so slimmer tyres are better.
As we live in sand here the wider tyres when let down give a much larger footprint so the car will travel on top of the sand unlike skinny tyres that cut in more.
That said, any tyre you choose with the right amount of pressure in it will work on sand/mud.
    Some better than others

Thanks for all the advice. Yesterday I bought the 15 x 8" sunraysia rims. After having a chat to a tyre salesman, it became clear that it was going to give me a lot more options.
So now I have to select a tyre for them... I don't want to go too large and loose power. Someone suggested not exceeding 31" diameter would be the way to go? I don't really do too much hectic 4wding, mainly beach and some dirt tracks to get to camp sites.
    Anyone else care to comment?

I have nearly worn out a set of BFG all terrains , they have done the job , but I will be lucky if I see 60,000km from them .
The previous set were Dick Cepek FC2 , an excellent all round tyre that gave me 80,000km , I will most likely get them again this time .
