Rear Pinion Bearing and Diff Whine

On our recent trip to Perth we had Southern Land Rover replace the rear pinion seal on our 2008 defender. I now have a diff whine and believe they did not preload my pinion bearing correctly. I have since trvaelled over 3000 kilometres back to Broome.

 I have two questions
1] will we have damaged our diff badly by doing the 3000 kilometres with the problem.
2] can i just make a series of small adjustments to the tightening nut and then test drive to see if the whine goes away or reduces, or is it recommended that i get professional help and replace the compression washer and have preload adjusted correctly.

 Plaese help if you can.

Does the whine change pitch between acceleration and de-acceleration OR is it a constant whine?

If constant look at your carrier bearings.

If variable look at your pinion bearings.

I'll leave it to someone with more knowledge to answer the questions.

Thanks for the response MLD it is a diff whine that only occurs on de-acceleration only

If you want to get Land Rover to have a look at it seeing as it was a main dealer job and there's got to be some warranty, the Land Rover agent for the Pilbara and Kimberley is (or was when I last checked) Shinju Motors, the Ford dealer...

Broome Ford - Shinju Motor Group

I would go there invoice in hand and see if they'll fix it.

 Hope you get it sorted.

 Cheers,

 Lou

I recently had my diff looked at by MR Automotive for a whine on de-acceleration and after having the pinion bearings and carrier bearings both replaced it still makes the whine. MR Automotive now think it is the crown wheel and pinion gears whining.

A diff whine on acceleration is the drive side of the crown wheel & pinion is biting too deep. A whine on de-acceleration is a deep bite on the coast side of the crown wheel & pinion.

A diff whine on de-acceleration, after bearings have been replaced would suggest the crown wheel & pinion on the coast side is biting too deep with too much outer toe, in a good crown wheel and pinion this would also mean the drive side will have too little bite and have too much inner toe. (this is all related to how they have set it up and how the preload has been done. Keep in mind its the combination of the two, its not just related to pinion preload.

Unfortunately you can end up with two distinctive wear patterns, generally you need to replace the crown wheel & pinion set. New bearings and re-doing the setup and pre-load is unlikely to solve the whine issue now.

Another unfortunate thing is plenty of repairers dont know how to do the crown wheel setup & pinion preload correctly, some cheat by taking readings with a dial indicator of the old crown wheel & pinion, do the overhaul and then duplicate the readings and hope for the best.

When a diff is removed apart from looking at bearings, before strip down a repairer does need to look properly at how the crown wheel & pinion are meshing on BOTH the load side and the coast side, from this information they can then determine if new bearings alone are needed or if a new crown wheel & pinion set is also needed to remove any whine a diff may have.

 Regards
 Daz
