Did you drain the oils and not re-fill?,is the noise coming from the handbrake dragging?. Pat

Hey guys...well I changed the clutch fork arm (for the heavy duty one) the clutch bearing ( for the heavy duty cast one) and the pivot arm ball mount ( for the heavy duty one)...
all changed at the side of my house, and by my self, not a single hand from anyone, no engine crane, just a bunch of ratchets straps and some wood across the windows....not fun.
I opted for just taking the gearbox out as much as I had to (the clutch was replaced only 25,000 ago, and looked fine.) ie keeping most of the floor intact, and just removing the bell housing cowling ect, and slipping it out, and down to work on the inside of the bell housing..
this all started because I wanted to replace the master cylinder and slave for the clutch....the pivot arm ball that is pressed in to the alloy part had come loose on inspection, no wonder I couldn't bleed the thing, it just stayed depressed n locked at the back of the housing!
anyhow, got it all back together, on a gravel drive, so was not a lot of fun crawling around like a snake....oh, im in cairns so its a nice 35 deg C and running at 110% humidity...character building eh?
now the gearbox is making some sounds I cant remember it ever making before, and the bearing seems to be making a bit of noise as well.
the sounds seem like they are coming form the back of the transfer case, and while I can select all gears, and the prop shafts spin (not connected yet) im scared to put it all back to gether just to test it, when it sounds not right now....ARAARAGGGG..
my back is out from doing it the first time, and I just got the bell housing all done up with all the mounts too....of course I used locklite too..idiot
any ideas?
I don't know if the sound is because the prop shafts are not connected, and it might need some weight/ resistance to balance the gear box...
a jack slipped from the gear box at one point, could it have done damage to the internals/ alignment?
any one....anyone at all got any ideas....Im praying its not a new box..couldn't have come at a worse time, and the trucks been off the road for 3 months now.....
I don't want to run it again in case it does more damage.
my hands are covered in cuts grease, and missing skin..been like it for weeks now.

SupporterIt could be the hand brake drum rattling around. Does the hand brake drum have the big retaining screw on the face of the drum?
If yes make sure it is tight, if no take the drum off (do not engage hand brake when drum is off) and run to see if the noise is still there.
Cheers
hand brake drum is what i was thinking as well.......

LOVE YOUR WORK GUYS...checked it and guess what...looser than a Saturday night hoe...whacked a bit of Loctite on it and gave the drum a clean...
so...
the new bearing is making a bit of noise, but has s l o w ly sorted itself out, I think I might have bent the clutch flanges a little...so it might be the squeak I get when applying the clutch???
it seems to be at that location..
I still don't think I have bled it properly, have to wait for the missus to work the pedal, but...
did manage to drive it out of the drive and reversed with no huge , nasty bangs...yay!
still have a lot of clutch shudder when reversing...im thinking more bleeding..probably me..ha.
I was watching the Dave Ashcroft...and every other vid on the net, and was very concerned when he said about blowing mai drive shafts...I don't know if I could even do it test starting the car if it happened to be "locked" the wrong way...I just cant wait to get it back on the road.
Yep, sounds like it needs bleeding it again. If you can try bleeding with a vacuum. I've only done it the way with the brakes. But it's a lot easier on your own.

well I moved it a bit, would have gave it a test flight down the runway, but the fun police rolled past, and with the bonnet still missing, I thought it would be a bad idea....they did look impressed but.
still got the shudder when reversing, but does feel a hell of a lot better than before...again, thankyou...thankyou..
im feeling better about facing it tomorrow...I lost count of the hours ive worked on this at about 130.
joys of owning landys eh?

I pleased you got It running , When I read you post , It brought back so many memory's of years ago , as a young bloke laying in wet , or on a cold drive trying to fix this or that . Then one problem would lead to another . Yes covered in dirty old oil , bit's of skin missing , not having the right spanner or socket . But you did It , So good on ya , lets hope your sorted now . Pouring rain, but its 30 deg c so that's a plus, except the side of the house is flooding, so woke up and dug 50 ft of drainage ditches, and waiting for it to dry up a bit...I know ..soft eh?
well mate this is my 5th landy, done almost all the work on all of em myself, treated myself when I was on the big money, getting all the stuff done that I wanted done "by someone that knows" ...and to save skin....ha
im not a mechanic, and my hands are less useful after a few days of being bent into unnatural shapes...
but what im realising is the pro's are like the pro's, fXXkinig you over for a good wad of cash...
my biggest fear is getting stuck somewhere, for a problem I cant deal with, and skimped to save money..injectors/pumps ect.
I know carry a spare fuel pump, full oils (enough to do a full change, if any of them get contaminated, belts (inc timing) and full filter set...all tools I have used to do this I carry, and now some modified ones, like the spanner ground down to get into the handbrake master cylinder..AWESOME GUYS!
Can you imagine me sitting of the side of a desert like the great sandy or one the back of the Plenty Highway, looking for a rock...to wear the spanner down enough... to get me in there... and get home...
Why....
because damned if im gunna leave her out there, she's been with me a decade, shed be stripped n burnt out before the day was out..and deserves to do better than getting put on the back of someone's truck...HA
It's a very deep thought, with me always, can I get out of here?
(half way throught the CREB Track north to south (just for fun, on my first run at it, with no back up vehicle...just us, fully loaded (2680kg), in the rain...I could feel the diff's creaking.
Thanks for all your help guys, it makes me feel better!

ok , got the bonnet on, and took it for a blocky, the bearing is sqeaking when half way depressed (poss slight bent splines/ a burr on the edges?) and the clutch is working, but still needs bleeding.
I can change gear, but am not happy with the sounds of the gearbox...feels like there is something loose,..cant put my finger on it, sound like it on the input shaft towards the bell housing...
im thinking the bearing has poss slipped off its slipper pad points, and is misaligning? id don't know...
looking like removing the box again to check...its the 7th straight weekend trying to get this sorted
God I must love this thing.
