Front Runner 45Litre auxiliary fuel and water tanks

What are the pro's and cons of fitting rear auxiliary fuel and water tanks?

Do they have any impact on clearance on the wheels? Also do they make much difference on the suspension?

We had a long ranger tank fitted to our Dmax and really noticed the extra weight and are conscious of not using up all the weight capacity with accessories.

Front Runner 45 litre water tank.

I have the water tank fitted to the rear of my Defender. I also have pretty stiff springs in the rear. When the tanks are full of water and fuel (127 litres of fuel) the car rides really well which would suggest that their is a lot of weight back there. When empty it's quite hard. But I'm happy with the compromise. It's nice to know I have the fuel and water on board.

I'm expecting to have to upgrade the springs once I've set everything else up as I tow a camper trailer as well. What springs do you run?

I'm running OME 500kg springs and Nitro Charger Shocks. I too tow a camper and this set-up has worked really well while towing and off road. But it is harsh on the road.
I did run Mil spec springs all round and they where brilliant off road. Great articulation but far to soft. Useless for towing.
I know a lot of people slag off the OMEs but I've had no problems or regrets.

People who slag off OME often recommend King Springs...

    Agree with Tombie,

There is actually very little wrong with OME shocks as they have the HD options if they are required.

I have only once on any of the my Defenders changed the shocks to other than OME and always had mild regret doing so. Great when loaded, but backside up empty and generally less fun to drive like that. Its always a compromise in some direction when you start altering geometry from original design.

Add to that the new gas charged shocks that they fit from new and you really need to re-evaluate whether changing Land Rover's intended geometry on the 2010 onward Defenders will really give you the "advertised" benefits.

    Cheers,

    Lou

I think Tombie was referring to the springs only. Same factory but a lot more $ for the OME ones. The shocks well I believe they are made by Monroe anyway. I was not overly impressed with the ones I had on a previous vehicle.
I am running Kings 2' lift springs HD with Bilsteins and Poly airs. Did not notice any real difference after fitting the Front Runner fuel tank in the guard. It has made no difference to articulation or clearance. Needed some minor work on the mud flaps.

I have the frontrunner fuel and water tanks, absolutely no issue with them, very happy. I am well within weight limits as I have no rear pay and travel fairly light
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Thanks for all your responses. I've read a few of the instal threads. Is there anything in particular in relation to routing of the hose between the 2 tanks I need to be aware of. There seems to be a concern with the hose hanging low and in a position where it could be torn off when off-road.

In regards to suspension I'm not planning a lift but expect I may need to either use stiffer suspension or airbags once the car is built up and fully loaded.

Craig, the shocks are totally different to the ones back in the Tdi/Td5 era, mine are running as good as ever after 100,000k's,much of it outback miles. Pat
