    New tyres required

    G'Day All,

I have done 21K km in my Defnder 90' since i got it 6 months ago. Unfortunately the Goodyear MT's that came with it are getting very noisy.... So noisy, that i can't use my bluetooth for my phone unless I am under 60 Km/h. So I am planning to put AT's on.

5 steel rims cost me $100, so the MT's will still be useful if required for a power-line run etc.

I am looking at the Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 265/75 R16 tyres.

Anyone used them? Your reviews will be most welcome.

My driving consists of dirt/gravel/small amount of mud most weekends either at home or not far away. I do a lot of KM's on the bitumen, and average about 40K/year.
I am towing reguarly in winter, in the dirt as well as on the tar.
I doing more beach work as I get out fishing more.

Hence the choice to go to an AT 50/50 tyre.

    Your thoughts gents?

    Cheers,

    Phill.

    Hi,
I've just put on 4 Toyo M55 in 235/85/16 on my D130cc but only have a few km on them so far.

They are 15mm wider than the Michelins I had as originals and the spare won't fit in under the tray, so till I get back from our S.A. trip I will carry the old spare.

Bit early to give an opinion yet, but certainly no complaints.

    cheers

Drop your tyre pressure to 32 front 30 rear, the MTR's are a crap tyre but dropping the pressure seems to quiet them somewhat. Pat

I found the Goodyears to be really quiet. For the first 500Km.... Then I thought I had done in a wheel bearing.... :-(
    Fortunately I hadn't. :-)
Since then the noise has progressively gotten much worse. I just rotated them again, and that seems to have shut them up for a little while.

Those General Grabber AT2 tyres look interesting. They look like they will dig badly on the beach though..... Anyone tried any?

    Cheers,

    Phill.

I have General grabber AT2 and have had no problems in sand with them along the SE coast of SA. Run them at about 10 psi on boost alloy rims. Plus they are/were cheap. A couple of years ago I rang around and found after a few tries that I could get four fitted and balanced at $760. Much better price than anything else.

    Thanks Pat.

I'll drop the pressures and see what happens. I am curious as to why you recommend lower pressures in the back. I have always run the back a pound or two higher. Just curious. :-)

I've got 3 defenders I'm running for work and unfortunately/fortunately I get to try tyres more often than most.. Our driving consists of fast windy bitumen, fire trails and crap mud, paddocks, and no tracks at all.. Best run has been with Mickey Ts, MTZ and ATZ p3, worst has been coopers and BF Goodrich MT. We have stuffed around with pressures and found 38-45 on a fully loaded 130 gives the best mileage.. I'm currently trialling a set of general grabbers on one of the 130s that does the forestry work..only 5km in so will keep you posted..toyos have also got a good wrap so will give them a go next..

    MTZ

My MTZ's have 90k on them, but time for a new set.
The price of Mickey Thompson's is getting a bit ridiculous, so despite the good millage with them I think I shall be looking for something cheaper.
I found tyre noise was never an issue.
I can't use my bluetooth over 60k's either but that's part of having an Isuzu up front.

I've never understood the reason for soft suspension and low pressure at the front and hard suspension high pressure at the rear, unless you are constantly loaded or towing all the weight is at the front, about 80/20 for a defender so higher pressure front. You will also find a defender steers tighter, less neutral handing with more front less rear. I've been running Bridgestone 661 235/85's for years. Great mileage, very versatile and 10 ply rating which mean no punctures! Low key and a very under rated tyre, except by many fleets up north, which says something I reckon.
