    Buying a defender with oil leaking from the filler cap

    Just wondering what everyones instinct on this would be??

    I am yet to inspect the vehicle and i realise that it could be a few things, but i was wondering what i should look for in particular in an inspection or if you would just avoid it completely??

    defender is a 300tdi

    Is it definitely leaking or is it just spill from when it was filled?

    Oh and on the subject of inspections if you thin you are ready to go ahead with a purchase I strongly recommend you gate a land rover specialist workshop to do a pre-purchase inspection for you.

    There could be a couple of causes. It may be a buggered or blocked crankcase ventilation valve.
    See top left right diagram (labelled 5) here: Land Rover Workshop Manuals > 300Tdi Defender > ENGINE > CYLINDER HEAD GASKET

    In a worst case scenario I think it might be too much wear on the cylinder walls causing blowby. I think the former is more likely.


    No doubt someone with more knowledge will drop in and offer a better opinion.

    Filler cap on my 300TDi leaked when I first took possession of it. A new filler cap fixed the issue.

    That's how I fixed most of the oil leaks. Replaced worn-out 20 year old parts with new ones.

    I will look closer when i inspect it, but i suppose if i have it running and take the filler cap off and smoke is coming out i should run from it..

    It would be nice if it was just an old filler cap.

    And if i like the look of it ill definitely get a land rover mechanic to have a look over it.
