    Talking Overseas Import

Does anyone know what modifications would need to be done to import 130 Defender from UK

If the 130's are classed as commercial vehicles over here (they are in the UK), then nothing!

My TD5 110Double Cab is a commercial in the UK and likewise here. It came in with no mods necessary at all.

Thanks Ron I will have to find out if they are commercial, do you have any idea on import cost via shipping?

I'm pretty (99%) sure they are a commercial here.

In 2009 my 110 in a 20' sole use container cost 1840GBP plus I think about $2000 at this end for blue slip, rego, plates & import taxes etc.

I used Karman Shipping in the UK and can't recall the company here in Australia, I could look back and get the details though if required.

They are commercial vehicles here, hence the lack of child restraint points & high mount stop lights.

There's regulations concerning ownership though - to bring it over relatively cheaply, you need to have owned the car for a certain length of time in the UK (12mths I think).

My 110 double cab had to get child restraints for rego in QLD when it came in, in 2012.

I would allow $6k plus vehicle duty, don't forget Insurance also.

    Compliance around $5/600

\The exchange rate has change a lot in the last few years, as well as an Increase in shipping costs.

Is this still the case that you can avoid the duty by registering and garaging in the UK for a year? When I lived over there (a long time ago now admittedly) I recall lots of fellow Aussie & Kiwi expats doing this with the premium marques, was quite the money spinner. Was going to do it myself but too broke ... and lazy!

I think they got wise to that quite a few years ago. Unless I am mistaken, you now have to prove both ownership and residence for the time, I think 12 months.

I believe that is the case unless it is a pre 1989 vehicle. If not it would need to be on the SEVS (I think that what its called) list which I wouldn't have thought a 130 would be as it's available here.
