    Rear locker on Defender 90 2013

    A friend of mine is thinking to install rear locker on his 2013 defender.

    He was warned by a LR garage that the rear pinion gear will not last if he install the rear locker.

    Anyone has any experience or can share your knowledge on this? Thanks

    Was that an April 1 joke. You could say that about any vehicle. I comes down to how and where you drive it. A locker will get you through places the manufacturers never intended the car to travel.

    I think he is sort of right actually. Just not expressed correctly. Nor in the context of how the vehicle may be used..

    The rover rear diff is known to have too small bearings too close together and this leads to a CW&P that does separate under high shock loads during HD 4wding.

    The normal fix is to 'peg' the diff - welding in plates and fitting a pin to limit crown wheel deflection so preventing pinion/crown wheel teeth separating too far leading to very high tooth loads and so destruction.

    Some go further and install thicker HD CW&P from Ashcroft.

    That said the rover diff while weaker than many on the market is fine for reasonable use with standard size tyres even with a locker.

    Remembering that the throttle does work both ways can save a lot of money in 4wding.

    I agree with Clive, my car has the standard LR diff in the front, similar to your rear diff, fitted with an Eaton truetrack (torque proportioning diff center i think is the correct term).

    And all standard shafts and CVs etc. My car has been a few places and never had a problem. Unless your very hard core with big wheels you should be OK.
    As Clive says your right foot is probably the biggest reliability influence

    I have a maxi drive locker in the back, but if I was doing it again I'd probably go for Ashcroft ATB front and rear for the same money.
