I use this:
Castrol Power Steering Fluid | Castrol Australia | Products | Home
It was the only one in spec that I could get locally in a large bottle (5L) for a full flush.
Not saying it is the best fluid possible, but it hasn't blown up ..yet
All,
I need to replace my steering box on the Defender tomorrow.
Am I right in thinking its standard Castrol (or similar) Power Steering Fluid?
Also, is the PAS fluid the same as Dexron III ATF?
Thanks
Jon

Brutus: 1969 109 ExMil 2a FFT (loved and lost)
The OE fluid was caltex/Texaco PAS14315, a special semi-synthetic PAS fluid that has a few additives to reduce/eliminate groan, etc.
A Dex IIH type ATF is fine, but can lead to noise and reduced feel, you're better off using a dedicated PAS fluid IMO.
One of the few ATF's that doesn't lead to groaning and noise was Castrol Transmax Z, but it's exxy being a fully synthetic ATF.
Lightweight manual trans fuids like Redine MTL, or Castrol Syntrans Z 75W-80 (9.1cSt@100*C) would work well too.

WoW, thanks Rick130,
I don't mind spending money on the Right Lubricants. I have always thought Castrol was quite a good brand and use them.
I have a Little groan when turning the wheel sometimes. It never happened on my Disco 1, but my newly acquired TD5 does.
So this could be coming from the Steering box with the wrong oil.
So am I best to use Castrol Transmax Z ATF or a high quality PAS Fluid?
Thanks very much, Nige.
If it's the same as the D2 Td5 (i guess it is?) then look for Penrite PAS. I've used it for the last 6yrs in my D2 and it's made as a direct replacement for the original LR PAS fluid.
Cheers

Thanks guys. I ended up going for Castrol Power Steering fluid because its what I could get locally & quickly.
No noises / groaning so far.
