    2014 Puma Gearbox Oil

    Hi Everyone,

I am trying to buy some spare gearbox oil for my 2014 Defender. I think it has a Getrag MT-82 gearbox in it?

In the manual it recommends Castrol BOT-130M 'or equivalent'. I found the data sheet for the BOT-130M and it is 75-90 GL4.

Can anyone recommend what type of oil to use? Can I Use 75-90 GL5 in the gearbox instead?

    Please help!

Some say any full synthetic of the correct rating is OK.

Others say use only the BOT oil (OEM)

It doesn't hold much, the OEM stuff is very expensive, but could save $$ in the long run.

    Hope that helps

Just be careful in regards to the oil you use for your gearbox, it need's to be yellow metal safe, GL4. Some GL4/5 fluids are buffered to prevent yellow metal discolouration.

Landrover specify Castrol BOT130M, now superseded by BOT328, part nos; LR006519, it's GL4.

I've been using Motul Gear 300 75w-90 fully synthetic, for the gearbox, it's GL4/5, but yellow metal safe. Had no problems with it, just my local supplier doesn't stock it anymore. You could also try Castrol Syntrax 75W-90, pretty easy to get hold of.

I'm about to do my 80000k service, and have just bought the BOT328 from Rovacraft for $63.24 per litre. Not cheap, but worth it in the long run.

You say your buying some spare oil for your 2014 Puma's Getrag box?. There's no real way to check the levels as the fill plug is not a level indicator. The box takes exactly 2.2 ltrs. I got 3.4 ltrs out of mine when I changed it last year. Overfilled from Solihull, as initial factory fill is 2.4, then the service fills are 2.2.

Penrite manufacture all the required oils for the new Defenders.
Transfer case and g/gox take Pro Gear 75w-90 full synthetic.

I'm pretty sure that's what I've just used in mine.

As before, I reckon go pulled out just a smidge over 3Lts out of mine.

As a side note, ensure you use the right bolt to fill it up with. Undo the wrong bolt and you could end up in all sorts of trouble. Not that I'd ever do something like that

Thanks for this info , I have an older r360 and the filler hole is also the level . I'm about to get a new Defender , and find this interesting that the filler hole is not the oil level . As you say they should hold 2.2 lt .I can see a problem if your pumping out of a say 20lt oil drum ,to get 2.2 . This sounds like a bad design , on a vehicle that should be able to be fixed in a paddock . How easy would It have been put the level plug at the right hight !!. Jim

The getrag box is used in many vehicles, not really an LR problem. The diffs in the D3/4 also do not have a level plug.Seems odd,but seems to be the way it is these days

The real silly LR design with the Puma is the issue if you run out of fuel.

With the 2.4 Pumas you just pressurise the tank thought the filler (compressor and a bit of rag will do it). The 2.2 engines have a lift pump in the tank, which (may?) negate the need to prime.

    Bit OT.

FYI, I'm running Castrol Syntrax in my MT82 - I find it to be (marginally) clunkier at cold temps and (marginally) better shifting the rest of the time (relative to BOT).

I buy the genuine oil from the LR dealers, costs about $65 per litre but once every 80,000km is not that big a deal. Having to drop the oil out to check the quantity is the stupidest design feature I have ever come across, recently did both the gearbox and transfer case. 2.2 litres for the gearbox, 2.4 litres for the transfer.
