I'd strongly recommend going tighter than 80k on the T/C oil change interval (if you're not already).

The real silly LR design with the Puma is the issue if you run out of fuel.
Hi Paul , I'm aware that this gearbox is used in other vehicles , There have been a few posts on this site about this gearbox over the last few years . This is the first time for me I've noticed the point about the filler hole not being the oil level . I don't think It matters what vehicle this gearbox is in the level still has to right . One other point about this box is there are no points for an oil cooler . Unlike the R380 So all in all I think this was a gearbox that wasn't designed for a Land Rover , It was one that was available out of the Transit

The reason that the filler hole on the gearbox is not the fluid level indicator is due to the fact that the Puma engine sits slightly higher up on the chassis than previous Defender engines, hence the bonnet bulge. This has the effect of putting everything behind it at an angle. If the engine had been fitted and it was a perfect design for the vehicle rather than one shoehorned into it under Ford's direction the gearbox would be on the level and the filler plug would act as your level guide too.

It also would not have cost the earth to fit a window like on many motorbikes (a glass plug with a line on it for level) or just drill and tap another filler and plug the old one IMO.

Its common in many new vehicles (and Bikes)...

My Cruiser requires the same - being semi-dry sumped... Just drop whats in there, measure out the required quantity and re-fill.

As before, I reckon go pulled out just a smidge over 3Lts out of mine.

As a side note, ensure you use the right bolt to fill it up with. Undo the wrong bolt and you could end up in all sorts of trouble. Not that I'd ever do something like that
    Which is the right one?

Drivers side, and it's tight to get into it. From memory, an 8 mm Allen Key was used.

The fill/drain plug on mine was a T50 torx. They have a smooth black paint finish, well mine do anyhow.
