    TD5 Diesel Rattle

Hi all. As a relatively newby 2004 110 owner, I would like to ask a question about diesel "rattles".
My TD5 has what I call the normal diesel rattle, but at times, particularly when the motor is below normal operating temperature, the rattle sound increases from time to time, almost like somebody is turning the sound up and down. The rattle sound is quite loud when it does this and then, suddenly it returns to what I call normal. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

With cold start, most modern diesels increase fuel metering above normal operating temps. This can certainly increase injector detonation rattle. Others, more familiar with your model might know if this is the case with the Td5 engine.

My td5 rattles when It's cold , I like to start It a leave It running for a few minutes before driving , I can't always do that . When It cold and I haven't let It warm up I always give the oil a chance to circulate first , and never drive It hard . Once It warms up It clicks away like a sewing machine . It's always been like that . They run so much better when nice and hot . One other thing with the td5 , you have to use the right oil !!.. Jim ..
