95 def, diagnosing troubling noise

My 1995 130 is letting me know that something's up but Im hoping it isn't as serious as my initial diagnosis. I suspected it was just tyre wear at first as the whir whir whir sound aligns with the revolutions of the tyres and you mainly hear it slowing down below 60kmh. The tyres have started to wear the outer knobs so I swapped the front tyres for the back, no difference. The noise actually sounds like the front diff and it only expresses itself on de-acceleration, not under acceleration or cruising. Oils are good and clean, replaced wheel bearings a few months back and rechecked. No typical CV's crunching or change of whirring noise on cornering under engine breaking. The noise disappears as soon as you take the decompression load off the drive train by accelerating slightly or engaging the clutch. I suspect that perhaps it maybe the pinion bearing on its way out but that revolves almost 4times faster than the axles. The reason I suspect the diff is the helical gear forces changing from acceleration to deacceleration. Anyway, does anyone have any ideas or experienced this noise and successfully diagnosed it. Out of interest, what would be the cost of recon diff?

This may be of no assistance to you at all SRat but I had 300Tdi Deafener and no one could diagnose the noise coming from the front end. Then I saw something on here which helped me and it turned out to be the crankshaft pulley slightly loose and wobbling on the shaft end.
Slackened the tension and took the belts off to one side and it was indeed that pulley. Kuckily it hadn't damaged the shaft or keyway but it did need a new pulley.
The noise it made had used to come and go and was very odd, so try it and see if that is it.

If your looking for a front diff , and I were you I'd be going Discovery front , there the same , and fare more plentiful than Defender , you should be able to pick one up from a wreckers of no more the couple of hundred $$ I wouldn't pay any more . Also It would be cheaper then getting your's rebuilt . Fronts don't do as much work as the rears . Of course this may not be your problem , I hope you get your problem sorted out !!.. Jim

Remove the front prop shaft, engage CDL & take it for a drive. If the noise is still there, it's in the rear.

Do the same with the rear shaft (after refitting the front).

If the above test don't narrow the search down maybe have the insides of the tyres checked. My BIL has a 110 TD5 with old BFG's on it. He had similar symptoms and eventually found that one of the tyres was delaminating internally after checking everything else.
He said he couldn't see any issues from the outside but put 2 new tyres on the front and the problem vanished.

Thanks phil, have new set of toyos in stock, will fit n balance and see. Find it hard to blame tyres as the noise disappears if clutching or accelerating. Me thinks diff, hoping not transfer case, will do checks, removing drive shafts as suggested. Shouldn't take all weekend to work it out. Another stout is the order of the day.
