OME do a comfort shock.
Doe's anyone know of some shocks with softer valving to make my Defender 130 less bumpy? Can feel every bump on the road. I know this is normal for a Defender (or landcruiser) but I was hoping to make it a little nicer to drive.
From what I can find the standard spring rate is 230 lbf/in for the front springs and 320 lbf/in for the back. There was also a 140 lbf/in helper springs in the back.
I've replaced them with 210 lbf/in in the front and 270 lbf/in in the back (with no load helper springs). Didn't make any noticeable difference to how bumpy it is.
I replaced the front shocks with new Gabriel Gas rider, and backs with OME Gas Nitro Sport (second hand).
Made the front ride possibly a little smoother, back a little worse.
I'm only running 28psi in my tires (33''x15'')
I test drove it with the back shocks removed and it was much nicer apart from the slow bouncing.
It now sags when I carry weight, but I carry nothing 95% of the time so I'd rather it be comfortable.
Any suggestions on a softer shock? I know that Disco 1 and possibly Range Rover fit
OME do a comfort shock.
Thanks Tombie. I read somewhere that OME do a comfort shock but can't remember where.
I rang two ARB stores (Burleigh and another I can't remember) and asked about a comfort shock but both stores said they had never heard if them
Probably telling you what you already know but, really the suspension is designed to be loaded. When I drove my new 130 back from Melbourne I hated it, but now as a work ute loaded at around 3300kg it rides like a limo and I wouldn't change a thing and I flog it off road as well, no lift no change from standard.. Can you possibly put 110 coils in it?
The 130 already has 110 coils.
The main coils are 110, the 140lb/in inners are what give the extra load carrying capacity. Can also be optioned for the 110.
I just removed the inners and ATM use dampers with low levels of bump valving, (semi-custom Monres from a leaf rear end Patrol with Silkolene Pro RSF 15w fluid, the heaviest damper fluid on the market)
Makes the world of difference to the ride, but low speed rebound is insufficient, although tolerable.
I recently saw a Britpart ad. In an English magazine which had a wide range of coil specs, so it might be worth searching the Britpart website to see what you can find.

Defender comfort shocks......... isnt that an oxymoron?
Jumbo Shrimp anyone?
Gabriel shocks probably arent the best place to start IMO. I think a Landy is worthy of something better like Bilsteins.
