Probably the wrong oil in it.
Just wondering if it is characterstic of these boxes to feel like a mop and bucket on shift changes and also crunch in second. I have driven a 6 in the last so many months with out a crunch (all td5) but for me the last made me really think the box was stuffed. Its done 130000km. Seems a little premature to me.
Probably the wrong oil in it.
All the r380 Defenders I've driven (8 so far) have had a notchy second gear when cold, running the correct oil (I use Syntrans) definitely improves it as well as all the shifts but second is still stiff when cold.
As bea uty notes above, the wrong gearbox oil can cause a lot of damage - for peace of mind change to a light gear oil (eg syntrans) asap.
Owners and garages who do not know better often use standard 80 weight gearbox oil
