Air bubbles after the filter of TD5

my defender won`t start anymore. this is a TD5. i hooked up some transparent tubes before(low pressure feed to the filter head) the fuel filter and after it too. low pressure feed line to the filter is very clean without any air bubble. But the return line from the fuel filter(low pressure)which is going to the pump is full with air bubbles. Note : I have removed the return line from the engine and air tied the union which is relevant to that in fuel filter head. That return line hooked up to a basket.
How is the air bubbles getting in, after the fuel filter. checked the filter gasket, even fitted a new filter and also checked the drain plug in bottom of the filter. and also the air bleed valve is okay. don`t know how to test it, diesel is not coming out. so my guess is that`s a good one.
Pump is noisy. changing pitch according to the air bubbles which i see after the filter (output of the low pressure line from filter to the pump).
When i directly connect the hose coming from the pump (low pressure feed) to the pump again(i mean without going through out the filter), no sound at all + not a single air bubble. And engine runs without a hassle.

Thank you. any help would be appreciated please.

Hi welcome to the td5 air problem , I'm sure there is lots of posts about this on this forum . There is a starting procedure for this . Try this It has worked for me . Put key in ignition turn on only , don't try to start , pump the accelerator peddle five or six times . You will hear the fuel pump running until It stops , Do this a few times . What your doing is making the computer run the pump This should force the air out of your system . Try starting , It may take a few goes . Don't run the starter for long , better to do It in shortish goes . Less strain on your battery as well . Be patient It should start !!.. good luck ..Jim ..

thank you for your reply. yeah i have tried it before. it will hardly start. but the pump is giving high pitch noise. But when i connect directly without the filter no air bubbles and no high pitch sound at all. engine is also starting first go.

If all your connections are done up nice and tight there should be no air getting into your system , have you checked the filter housing to make sure the O ring is sitting square , or even if It's in there , or even if there are two in there . You say It starts ok. but your fuel pump is screaming , I must assume you have fuel . Was It running ok before you changed your fuel filter ? If It was and the only thing you've done is put a new filter on , every thing is done back up , and It starts . It sounds like you have got rid of the air . Also if your happy the fuel pump is ok then you've got me stumped . Hopefully some one else can advise you !!..

Before trying a new pump, dismantle the fitting on the return side of the fuel pump to the tank
Here is the link to the service bulletin.

Even if the "O" ring is intact, you should get a very minor flow of air if you blow through it.

Took me 2 fuel pumps - I Bearmach & now a VDO b4 I found the cause of very difficult starting. Probably need a new starter next..
