    Surface Rust Treatment?

    I've temporarily removed my rock sliders to inspect behind them and found that the sliders had been rubbing against the bodywork and a small amount of surface rust has now started to appear.

    Any thoughts on how to treat this surface rust? My goal is simply to prevent any further rusting. I am not particularly interested in restoring the paint work in this particular (non-visible) location unless it is part of the rust treatment.

    When I reinstall the sliders I will mount them in a manner that provides greater clearance from the bodywork to prevent them from rubbing in the future.

    I have used "kill rust" a long time ago. It's like a clear varnish which I used on an old metal gate. After 10 years outdoors, the gate had no added rust on it.
    I have had a look on google for kill rust and it comes up with Wattle kill rust. Not sure if it's the same product.

    Thanks for both of those replies - much appreciated. I've tried a rust converter previously on previous vehicles, so for a bit of variety I've decided to give the Penetrol a go and see what happens. I was able to pick a spray can of it at Bunnings up at Bunnings and have put a couple of squirts on the offending spots.

    Don't forget to invert the can and spray till it clears the tubing, or you'll gum up it's innards.

    The rock sliders were rubbing on the paint work. I've addressed it by re-mounting them with a 5mm gap above (to allow for a bit of upward deflection) and with a gap behind as well. Hopefully it will be enough. Care was taking with the re-mounting to ensure that the sliders won't slip, even if they receive a substantial knock, which I'm sure they will at some point...
