Let down by Continental - alternatives?

I've so far been very happy with the Cross Contact AT that came with my 110 from new. However today I tried to arrange new tyres, after near 40k mine are getting a bit battered, to be told by Continental there were none in the country, and wouldn't be for at least a few weeks, also that this was not an unusual situation.

Frankly that is not good enough, if they want to sell to this market they should carry the stock to do do without someone being stuck waiting. Fortunately for me it's not urgent, but what if I had blown a couple of sidewalls???

So I am now thinking about changing rubber. I'm looking for an AT tyre, 235/85 16 for general touring so a good mix of on / off road. Would help if they are readily available.

    Any recommendations?

    Cheers

    Simon

    Hi Simon.
Where are you based? I have a set here 4 @ 5000km and 1 completely new that were considering selling.

    Otherwise D697 are great AT...

As for continental not stocking them, don't forget continental didn't fit them, they arrived here fitted...

I recommend Bridgestone 661 235/85r16. They're not fancy and they're not cheap for a reason, they are excellent. A/T 10 ply. Never had a puncture in over 300,000km. I regularly get 60K km + from them. Most station owners up north and mining companies run them. You can get them everywhere. Quiet on road, seriously heavy duty off-road. Very underrated in domestic 4WD sector.

I'm having a good run with Mickey T ATZ P3, but mine are 265/75/16, not sure they do your size? But I am also running a set of general grabber 235/85/16 AT on one of the 130 tray tops that does a fair amount of bush work they are holding up well, look very much like a BFG all terrain pattern and the best part is that they were $275 ea!

Seems to happen with a lot of tyres especially for Defender sizes.
I have had the same from Hankook, Cooper, BFG, Maxxis, Goodyear, Bridgestone for various Land Rovers and Maxxis on a sedan. What was worse is 2 of them did not even have a size listed at one point and tried to sell me something in an alternate pattern that I did not want.
Hankook annoyed me the most, the tyres themselves were great and still have 3 half worn spares now. I sliced one open in a creek near Newman, Hankook only had 1 set of 4 in the country and would not split them and were reluctant to even send them out of Melbourne. Yep could have bought a new set but thought no way if that is their service. Currently have Hercules tyres on that are 10 ply.

I've had trouble finding 235/85/R16s in these parts as well. I was thinking of maybe going up to 265/75/R16 as some suggested but won't that impact engine power and fuel milage? Not to mention it may make the turning radius even smaller than it is now. Are these presumptions correct? If not, then I may have opened up some more options but I'm quite happy with 235s now and luckily found Saffiro ATs in 235s so I'll give them a go once my Federal Couragias wear out. Them's noisy at high speed!
