Angry I might just set my deefer on fire tonight...

Hi all, after some help ive got serious surging issues again and they're getting progressively worse. My surging is now under heavy acceleration, light acceleration at about 100km and it gets surgy all through the gears 2nd third and fourth especially when im giving it a bit. it sort of splutters then takes off like its got powerband on the old two stroke motorcycles.

    she is a 2000 td5 110

it has a td5 inside nnn ecu with a stage 2 map, allisport intercooler, egr has been blanked (properly) injector loom replaced, no oil at the plug, checked the wastegate actuator yesterday and its not sticky at all. all hoses are silicone jobbies now. it seems like its not getting fuel and i know a lot of guys say its wastegate sounding symptoms but ive fiddled with that thing more than a teenager fiddles with his privates. I ran the fuel pump a few times yesterday it seems fairly smooth but i could be wrong.

im down to the AFM which i thought about plonking the $250 for the BD one.

a fuel pump which is $$$ and the TPS sensor which is also fricken $$$

anyone got any definitive answers for me? my surging is crazy she wont even hold speed the only time it feels smooth is under a medium amount of throttle which is making me think fuel pump. I have a LR tank too so is it gonna be a bitch to change?

cheers guys if worse comes to worse there'll be a bonfire at my house shortly and free marshmallows for everyone!

I think mulgo sells an aluminium plate to give easier access to the pump in the load area floor, instead of dropping the entire tank to get to the pump.
Not 100% on surge causes, maybe the more experienced heads will comment?

    I like the pink ones....
Have ya done the usual tests, like fuel pressure etc etc?
Was thinking wastegate solenoid, but Im not sure Deefers had that fitted.....?

Any other signs like colour of exhaust?
Fuel filter changed? Sounds to me like fuel blockage or fuel pump.

little more exhaust than before but its just been chipped, it never blew any smoke prior to the chip... in fact it still doesnt really now, you only notice it at night with headlights pointed at your rear

it feels like a fuel blockage to me too, the car came from out west and was covered in red dirt, maybe just a blocked line i do run my tank below the last ten litres quite regularly..

Looks like some sort of fuel restriction to me. Lets fuel through fast enough for motor to run but not to pull properly. Probably just need systematic checks to try and locate problem. Long ago I had baffling one with a 4 cyl petrol Series 2A. Was inclined to surge and not pull quite as well as it should at near top speed of 70 mph. Then I pulled off mechanical fuel lift pump and replaced diaphragm which sprung a leak. Afterwards, it would only get to about 40 mph before surging and would not go much faster.

Took me close to two frustrating days before I discovered the problem. Fuel line from lift pump to carby was plastic with short bits of steel tube with pipe fittings on them pressed into each end. Looks like when it was originally assembled, the steel tube on the fuel pump end had not been smoothed off before installation. When pushed in, it cut a flap of plastic. This for a long time just slightly restricted fuel flow from the maximum sometimes wanted. However, removing and replacing the end of the pipe from the lift pump disturbed this unwanted flap enough to make the restriction much worse.

Was easy enough to get rid of this flap and permanently cure the problem when it was diagnosed.

One of the most common types of fuel restriction /blockage I have come across is when there is a screen in the pickup pipe in the fuel tank. Can get blocked with crap. Often a quick temporary fix is to disconnect the pipe somewhere and blow back into the tank to get at least some off. To fix problem long term, need to clean tank out. Maybe not quite as simple on a TD5, which my knowledge of is limited. Think there is a lift pump in the fuel tank.

How does it run using only cruise control?

This will eliminate the possibility of a faulty TPS.

What is this cruise control you speak of? The closest the defender comes is brick on the pedal..
