What! No airbags

There was a accident chart that had defender as equal 2nd safest from uk. It's been on here before. Uk real world stats showed lowest deaths, lowest head and neck injury with a slight higher rate of leg injury.

Basically in the uk you have the least chance of dying in an accident in a defender or disco. Safer than any ovlov or other euro only equalled bu a merc S class or big jag

A Renault Clio, for example gives you a 5% chance of death or serious injury and a 72% chance of some injury in a crash with another vehicle. The Defender gives you a 1% chance of death or serious injury and a 33% chance of some injury. Remember this isn't some artificial test using crash test dummies, this is real world accidents with the data recorded by the police attending the scenes and collated by a government agency.

The most dangerous car in their list is the Rover Mini which gives you an 84% chance of injury, 14% chance of that being fatal or serious.

If, however, you do anticipate hitting a concrete block across 50% of the frontal area of your car at 30MPH I'd advise getting something with a high ENCAP rating.

From my experience, a majority of the accidents I have been to, the airbags have not even gone off, and that's including some serious head ons.
Most of the drivers out there have a false sense of security, thinking the air bag will save them.

As a testament to the above post (Frantic) have your girlfriend look at this. I have also been in a County that rolled, we all walked away without any injuries, myself, wife and three young boys.

Somehow my wife has never asked about the air bags. I think she just assumes they are there. At any rate, whenever the question does emerge, I am going to say the average number of airbags between it and her Volvo is still pretty reasonable.

Tell her you have an airbag whenever she gets into the Defender.:D
I've posted elsewhere here how a woman reversed her car into my stationary Puma outside of a school. She replaced the car while I replaced the number plate on the Defender.

Note that the Discovery 2 was much stronger than d1 having used massive steel side impact beams and steel bonet and door skins etc. They also used seat belt pre tensioners and better airbag deployment so the results insofar as they cover d1 also skew the results down for Disco.

The thing that worries me in my TD5 90 defender is where the seat belt bolts into the side pillar.
It's exactly head height and very hard and protruding.
A big side impact or rolling the car would cause a big hit to the side of your head.
Not sure if it's the same in 110's or later models.
Makes me want to wear a motorbike helmet ;-P
