Puma gearbox, transfer noise or something else?

I have just driven back from Cairns towing the caravan and all was fine, I changed down from 6th to 5th, then fourth and the gearbox roared, kind of a growl noise. I slowed down, and changed down a gear and back up to fourth and the noise was back, then up to fifth and it was gone again, also no problem in top. I stopped at the in laws in Atherton for a bit, the we got on our way again, I went up and down the gears and no noise! I tried again half way home and it was back, then in a winding bit before we got home I tried and tried to make it do it again, but now it wont make the noise so it seems it has fixed itself again!! What can it be, I am about to make a trip to Brisbane in less than a week as I am on a state shooting team so I must get there or I will be letting the state team down so this possible issue worried me, any thoughts what it might be?
    Thanks
    Chris

You didn't change down too fast did you?,I don't go down into fourth until I'm doing less than about 30. Pat

No I didnt. Also when I made it do again I was revving between 2,00 and 3,000rpm.

This may sound silly so please don't take it the wrong way

By any chance was it the viscous fan roaring?
My thought is with the van on it's working a bit harder, more so in the hills.
The higher the revs the more evident the fan noise would be.
    Cheers, Kyle

I did think of that at the time, but I dismissed the idea thinking that the fan could not be so audible. Now you mention it I am wondering, how loud is the viscous fan on a puma?
I hope that is all it was..

I think Kyle could be on the money.

If you hit an incline and its working hard in 6th then 5th, by the time you get down to 4th, its pumping enough heat out through the radiator to pull the fan clutch in, plus the revs coming up make it much louder.

The lower road/wind noise makes it more noticable too when you get down a couple of cogs.

I think you'd feel it as much as you heard it if it was coming from the gearbox.
