Easiest first, yes you can fit maxi drive flanges to OEM CV's and rear axles. Thus maxi flanges doesn't help with narrowing down your enquiry.

If the PO fitted maxi branded CV's then you are running the OEM County CV's with a modification to suit the later defender. Maxi drive supplied their own brand axles in their front and rear set up (Hi tough engineering). Only KAM and Ashcroft make aftermarket CV's. If you have a maxi drive front locker the probability of maxi front axles and county CV's are very high. They were generally sold as a complete kit and most people didn't option to only fit the locker.

Can't offer much help with the grinding noise but a CV is definitely on the short list. Have you put it on a stand and put an ear to the offending swivel ball. Steal a stethoscope.

As for your suspension question, do a google search of posts from this year. Its a hotly contested topic that has had a fair bit of air play. So much so that your post is an unfortunate victim of its prior and divisive popularity.

Big Cheers, MLD i have spent the morning on the suspension stuff so working my way through it. I havent had it up on the stand yet, work commitments are keeping me from it, so i'll block out a week and try to put it on the jacks and do it all at once. I dont have a maxi locker in the front so im thinking at this stage (and after talking to the MR boys) that i may just have the drive flanges and nothing more. the noise has only just started in the last week.. i'll need to pull off the flanges and have a look anyways so i'll see whats there. i dont have any leaks from the drive flange or even on the swivel side the PO seems to have had some pride in his vehicle, ive just finished a big service and next on the list is greasing the swivels... i was unsure whether he was running oil or grease though ... i might just get some oneshot and get it in there... maybe that might help too.

on further inspection and comparing images online im thinking the PO was wrong i think i have terrafirma flanges, there are no visible marks like an MR and no recesses either nor are they scalloped like the ashcroft.. the sealant coming out round the edges of the 50mm nut would indicate the Oring issues that seem to prevail with the terrafirma as well. Now im wondering are the TF flanges setup to oil all the way out to the ends like the MR? or not?

i guess ill have to find time to pull the caps and see whats happening in there.

Re the noise, it isn't the tyre rubbing on the radius arm at full lock by any chance ?

Take a photo of the drive flanges and post it up, although MD and HT flanges usually have a part number punched in them.

dont think so... not sure it only started 2 days ago... its never done it before it could be though.. it has that feel like you can feel the uneven tread of the tyre going round if that makes sense.

if that is the case why has it come up all of a sudden?

too much hard driving maybe... she did get a hard time on the beach last week. few unintentional jumps and some daylight under the cab

the tide left some big peaks that were hard to see in the low light/overcast day.

It does sound like the tyre rubbing.

If it is, check your tie rod, I'd reckon it's bent after getting some air and hitting heavy sand and the wheels are toeing out more than they should.
That would explain everything.

oh well you gotta pay to play.. i'll check it out in the morning when i get home.

cheers for that. the tie rod rubber was looking perished and has been on the list anyways so this might give me the motivation.
