I had a copy of the conversion document with my new Defender, and pointed out the welding recommendations re disconnecting the battery and alternator to the chap putting a tray on my new toy.
He said it was totally unnecessary if the welding earth is near the weld point. (the welding was on the tray, not the chassis rails). I disconnected the battery even so.

Years later I had some welding done on the exhaust system, and the workshop said they have never disconnected any electrics on even the most electronic of vehicles.
I had no problems after the job was done, so I now think the instructions given by Land Rover in the documents are purely a tin-pants job.

    cheers

The tray manufacturers that I have contacted in the Canberra region all want the vehicle to build the tray on which will add weeks to the delivery time, particularly around Christmas. My options as I see them are as follows:

Buy a second hand alloy tray for less than $1000.00 and make mounts to suit based on the engineering drawings floating around and replace it with a steel tray in the future when I have more time.

Build a steel tray myself and hope I can get it close enough to fit to my satisfaction without having the vehicle to fit it to.

Buy a second hand Defender 130 steel tray - the wrecker in Adelaide has at least one, get it sandblasted and powder coated black and ready to fit. Might be fairly expensive once the transport, sandblasting and powder coating is taken into account.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to proceed? The vehicle will be Aintree green with a black roof so an alloy tray would not look particularly attractive hence the replacement steel one in the future.

    Thoughts appreciated,

    Hey mate,

I bought a new 130 in February and had a tray made by Buffalo Equip on the sunshine coast, qld. I went with these guys as they had built one for a td5 130 previously. However they were doing another puma tray build after mine, the reason i mention this is that they should have a plan of the tray design. They also do steel trays not just alloy ones but i am very happy with the build quality of their product.

Ive attached some photos of my tray incase you are interested.

Any questions send me a PM.

Can anyone tell me where the loom for the taillights terminates on a 130? I need to rewire the tray and it would be better to place the wires ready for easy connection at installation time.
