    GFT MT 82 six-speed gearbox

Can the newer Defender 6 speed gearbox sit happily behind a V8 engine?

What are the pros and cons?

    Has anybody taken this modification?

Yes, I've "heard" that Mustang & Defender use the "same" box.
Actually, I believe there would be important differences, because of the different application/ requirements of the two vehicles.
Anyone REALLY know how they would be different, ...Power/torque rating, bearing sizes etc etc?
As an example, Brock used the T5"G" Borg Warner for his 5 speed conversons, the "G" being the ultimate version of the T5 at the time. There were several other "versions" of the same box, that were nowhere near as strong as the "G" version.
So, just wondering what is the situation with respect to the Defender/Mustang gearbox?

Pickles, pretty sure (memory is hazy) that the Mustang version has a higher torque rating, and as Pat said, it comes out of the Getrag China factorie/s vs the Deefer box coming from the UK or Europe.

I actually asked Dave Ashcroft about a few things/differences once, I'll see if I can dig up the correspondence.
There were a few things he didn't like (read, cheap) in the Getrag.

The MT-82 has an integral bellhousing, making it pretty difficult to adapt to anything. Throwing enough money at it will get the job done though.

Here's some info from Dave A re the MT82.

    Hi Serg,

no oil pump, no shims, no filter in the MT82,

internals look strong and simple, 82mm centres, no taper roller bearings, just large cylindrical roller bearings, gears are big and have fine teeth and look ground like the LT230 Q gears, selector forks are steel fabricated with plastic feet, these feet look like a weak point, would like to fit bronze feet,

Mustang transmission does indeed come out of the China factory, Defender out of the Halewood factory. Lower gear ratios are very different between the 2 (taller in the Mustang) driven by the higher engine speeds in the Mustang and towing requirements in the Defender which might mean you need a transfer case ratio change to get the best driveability if you put a V8 in front of the Defender box.
