Thread: Rear recovery point with ridgididge carrier

Tow bar with a recovery hitch? That's what I have. Bit expensive if you don't have a tow bar.

I fitted a carrier to a customer's car recently which had the Nugget recovery point. It will fit, except I had to cut 10mm off the bottom of the locator (see pic below) This did not affect anything as the bolts were still fully within the slots.
If you are piggy backing the Nugget reco point over top of the tow bar you will have to pack the carrier door plate off the door by the thickness of the reco point, 10mm, this will retain the correct adjustment for the carrier pivot arm which attaches to the door plate.

While this might work I'm not sure I would want to pack out the carrier from the door ...............What are the tow bar options that fit the rigidige carrier .....
Would prefer to have a tow bar that can double as a recovery point ........

The locating bracket was designed using the factory tow bar pictured here, it's 8mm thick and the bracket shares the top two holes.
The carrier is adjustable to allow for a bit of difference in the thickness of the tow bar plate.


This is an early Hayman Reece tow bar. As you can see it doesn't use the top two holes so I supply washers to pack out the bracket to suit.


Can't remember the brand of this one, but it's the same situation as the early HR.


This is a later HR which will work the same as the factory tow bar.


There might be other tow bars but these will give you a good idea of how it all works.

Thanks .....but I'm still a bit confused ....so if I fit a HR tow bar with a RD carrier
Would I still have to pack out the door plate as well as the bar that fits over or under the carrier catch at the bottom ..in other words to fit the RD carrier with a tow bar or a recovery point the whole carrier has to be set out from the door and bumper by the thickness of the recovery point / tow bar plate as either if used share the top tow holess .......sorry not very mechanically minded......guess I need to look at this on a vechicle to fully grasp it ........

No worries, it can be a bit hard to visualise things.

The only time you would need to pack the door plate off the door is if you had something extra in between the tow bar and wheel carrier bracket, such as a Nugget recovery point.
This picture is how the carrier is designed to be set up at the tow bar, with the bracket 8mm (thickness of tow bar plate) off the chassis. As long as that bottom bracket is approx 8mm off the chassis nothing has to be packed out.


When I mentioned packing the bracket out with washers, this is only if the tow bar does not share the top two holes, the washers would bring the bracket out to approx 8mm off the chassis where it has to be.

Thanks Murry .......that's a lot clearer

NoW suppose I did not want a tow bar ......just tell me again why could I not share the top two holes with the nugget recov point ....is it too thick and upsets the RD carrier .........ie ....slip the nugget under the catch of the RD carrier and use the top two holes as shared
