    Defender P38 rear diff whine

So my rear diff whine is starting to bug me and I'm seeking recommendations around getting it sorted.

It's a full Ashcroft third member (R&P, air locker, pegged, etc) and has whined since installed - I had hoped it would get better as it settled in, but 20k on and it's still the same and I've had enough.

My plan is to flick the stock third member back in (which, ironically, is quiet as a mouse) while I get the whine sorted.

Any thoughts on the best way to go about this? My default plan is to take it to Awards in Sydney and let them have at it. Alternatively I could let one of the LR or general trans specialists in either Sydney, the Hunter or Canberra take a look ( I'm routinely travel between them).

    Any thoughts, recommendations, etc?

Assuming it's just set up, I suppose I could have a crack at tweaking the diff myself, but the last one I did was almost twenty years ago in a Kingswood...

Hi , It sounds as though It was never set up right in the first place . For It to be noisy form day one , then get worse . There is a bit of skill setting up diffs , they use engineers blue , and gauge meters . Good luck with whatever way you go , and let us know how you do !!.. Jim

Yeah, that's my view as well.

In any event, I suspect that the C&P will probably need replacing now that they've done so much time incorrectly set up - can anyone comment on this?

Just to clarify, the whine isn't getting worse, just more annoying (ie I'm getting sick of it).

Have you discussed it with Dave Ashcroft? He is very very good with after sales service and would hate to hear your unhappy with his product so I am sure he would offer advise.

Yep, I have. He did seem to be prepared to come to the party re the C&P, however seems I needed to pull the diff and to get it inspected to determine the issue. I couldn't do this at the time and I've pretty much since decided that if it's just set up and can be addressed through adjustment then my intention is just to take it on the chin. If there's some sort of manufacturing issue I'll probably go back to Ashcrofts to discuss further.

In all fairness it took me a while to get back to them on this stuff, in part because it took me three months to get the diff fitted after it was shipped, another three months to get the bed in period done (ie the first couple of thousand kms) and then I buggered off on holidays for a couple of months afterwards!

I've just been putting up with it since then due to work getting in the wsy of life so it's now been about a year since I first contacted him.

Had a similar issue. Diff whine from day one. Fully rebuilt diff with ATB bought complete from Ashcroft. Eventually pulled it out for a look. There was a few thou too much runout on the ring.

Both the ring and the pinion had been damaged with irregular wear pattern evident

Talked to Ashcroft's and they were helpful and proactively offered to compensate (to rectify I had the R&P from the original diff swapped in and setup by local indie mech)

Ashcroft's explained that there can arise situation where the chamfer on the some ring gears doesn't allow the ring to seat properly (interference with diff centre casting) causing excess runout. Apologized and compensated for not catching it before shipping to me.

Excellent team/business to deal with and highly recommended. I will be buying from them again, no hesitation there.
