howdy all, since my recent experiences with workshops, im doing as much maintenance as I can myself on my 110 defender 300tdi
going to check the handbrake drum and ajust up or replace the shoes
may as well do the flange, my question. is there a bearing behind the flange that I can or should change while im there and can it be done without major surgery? any other advice would be great cheers all.

Geez from memory there is some movement......hopefully and confirm
The leak could either be the seal or through the splines....we but its been a while since I have had one off
As weeds said there will be a small movement as the end of that shaft goes into the centre diff and its not exactly an interference fit. Have a good look at where the leak is coming from - most likely its from the the intermediate shaft in an LT230.

The rear flange is easy to remove insitu.
you can replace the rear seal and the felt washer as well.
use a new nyloc when putting it back together.
nothing tricky, its is just torqued up.
I replaced the seal on one recently and the m20 nyloc was barley finger tight.
There is a dust cap on the back of the transfer which needs to be tapped off to allow the seal to be changed.
Good time to put some fresh bolts in the flange for the rear shaft.
