I wanted to mount the head unit inside the dash too, but I couldn't find room anywhere. I settled with mounting it on the passenger side of the cubby box as you mentioned. It's easy to route the cables there, good ventilation, out of sight from the driver's seat and its not obvious when you look in the passenger window.

I thought it would be a good idea to see where others have mounted theirs and see how that would work for me.

Do you find that you hit the mic with your knuckles when turning on the lights or using the indicator?
I looked at that spot for the mic, and thought it would be too prone to being in the way of my knuckles. And lower down it would be in the way of the hand break.

Where did you run the cables in and out for the unit?
Did you get the extension cable with the unit?

mine was mounted by the previous owner next to the AC vent rotart switch. The radio unit was screwed directly below on the panel in front of the AC vent.
The speaker sits between the T case lever and the cubby box cupholder.
Works fine.

There's plenty of options out there for non permanent adhesives if you are adverse to screwing. Just make sure you go for a known brand like 3M or something, and it should last.

It took some fairly careful placement being that close to the left hand stalk. I find it a good spot as I've usually got my hand on the steering wheel and just stick my fingers forward to put the blinker on. I don't find it gets in the way of the horn either.

The Icom comes with an extension cable which I routed into the dash beside the steering column as you can see, then it runs down behind the angled bit of the centre dash where the mic is and under the floor lining along the transmission tunnel, up beside the handbrake (thats the hardest bit of the cable run) and across under the front of the cubby box.

The mic lead can be tucked away on that little shelf beside the steering column too which keeps it out of the way when not being used.

I've mounted my mics (I run two radios) in a similar position to Beery, and I haven't had any issues with interference with the indicator or horn...sure the leads do get a little in the way but I can live with it!

I had a solution that I really liked on my previous puma - I removed the cigarette lighter and fed the mic through that hole then used the mic holder to cover it all up. I managed to do it all without drilling. It required an extension for the mic cable, but it all worked very well. I had no use for the cigarette lighter and I had a bunch of USB outlets in various locations.

Do you have an Ex-Box?

I've mounted my main unit under the lid of the Ex-Box, and have the handpiece in much the same position as Beery but a little lower.

On the front of the Ex-Box I have a three switch panel. The three slots are for my Ctek charger, compressor switch, and a blank. I cut a hole in the blank and got crafty with some Araldite and black paint and fitted a female socket for the handpiece. This means the cable hangs low and out of the way, and it's a simple job of fitting or removing it to go back in the cubby when not required.

I'd attach some photos but I'm away up north for a while.

I hang my hand piece over the rear vision mirror day to day when not in use, in an effort to get the spiral wound cord to lengthen. I should probably mount it properly somewhere.
The body of my UHF is mounted down by the passenger foot well aircon vent, at the bottom of the centre of the dash.
