    130 TD5 transfer case

    Hi guys
My transfer case in my Defender has broken 4 teeth
On one of the gears ,pics in my gallery.
It was reco not long ago including gearbox and
    Centre diff.. (long story ).
Now it seems that when they did the reco some how
I've ended up with a different transfer case 😠
Been told by the serial number its out of a RRC

Wanted to just replace the broken gear
Or should I look for a good secondhand or reco
    Box for it .....
Your ideas and thoughts are most welcome

    Cheers Ray 20151107_122822.jpg

You would be better off buying a reco one with a warranty .

    transfer case

hi mate. ALl of the defender transfer cases until 2007 were 1.4:1 ratio approx. Discovery or range rover will largely be 1.2:1 which is ok in a defender if you don't tow much as they cut the revs at highway speeds but also increase 1st gear.

I'd stick with a defender transfer case in a 130 for sure.

    Cheers

    ashcroft

I had a similar problem on my td5 110. I blew the gearbox.. bought an Ashcroft HD replacement and then a few months later the transfer started to make crazy noises. I opted to rebuild the transfer case myself using the Ashcroft kits available via their webpage.

I had never done a rebuild of any sort of transfer/gearbox so it was a completly new experience for me. It took me half a day to get the broken one out, one day to do the work and another half day to get it back in. Most of the time was spent figuring stuff out for the first time. I also took the opportunity to fit the heavy duty parts and the bigger sump to reduce any potential future problems.

All in it cost me around $800AU (in 2013) including shipping. Without the HD parts I could have probably saved a few hundred $.

One point that I forgot to mention was that the guys at Ashcroft are really helpful. They will make the recommendations of what you should do/get based on all the information you give them. They respond overnight (generally) via email to technical questions or you can give them a call. Their advice is generally solid. (I have not heard otherwise and my experience has been flawless both times).

    Update on my outcome......

    I've sorted a good secondhand LT230
Out of a Disco 2 to replace my transfer case problem
I know the ratios are different but it's the easiest
Option available mainly due to the time frame Now I just need to know any
Tricks to look out for on this project.
Any oil seals or gaskets I might need in advance
Or any special tools I might need

I'll be doing this at work in the workshop starting
Next Friday night and will need to have it up
    And running by Monday morning..

    Cheers Ray
