Went for a country drive to test out the iPad with the recently dowloaded Hema Explorer. I am impressed with the features I have discovered so far, the Points Of Interest are a real treat. Could only load, West Australia, NT & South Australia so far, as the old iPad doesn't have enough free space, but can remove some states & add the others when we need them.

Also took a photo of the Garmin GPS in reverse camera mode. I'm very happy with this as it should make hooking up a trailer or the caravan a piece of cake. The range bars have also been set so with the green line up against an object the Defender is a foot away from whatever is inline. Previously I always seemed to park yards away!

Also happy to report that the Ram mount is rock solid for the iPad, even on our bumpy red dirt local roads.

Great news about the RAM mount! I really need to get one now, it should hole my iPad 'mini' even better!

Hema Explorer is great! Used it from E to W, recording the trip as well. I did note however that not all camping sites etc etc are listed... and that when you 'click' on the info, it does not give contact details such as the phone number or website.

Might have to download Wikicamps for all that good information, & we do have the tracks & trails map book for WA that has all of that info. Just a question of space. How was the trip?

Can vouch for the wikicamps app, I've had it for ages and has a lot of good features. Esp the search filter on different camp sites when looking for what features you are looking for e.g. toilets, wifi, caravan access, pets allowed etc etc

    Trip was great!

Took the 'short cut' across the Nullarbor... my health precluded doing the Great Central Road mate...

We saw some amazing things, whales at 'The Head of the Bight' well worth the stop.

Hooked up randomly with many other 'grey (bald!) Nomads' all doing the same thing. Only saw ONE other Defender on the whole crossing...

I was towing my 800kg loaded camper trailer... at 110kph all the way. And got about 330km per tank! (old money that was 18 mpg which I think was pretty good...) I carried 100L of additional diesel in the trailer so was 'comfortable' to stretch the range of the OEM tiny tank in the 90. I pushed the fuel needle very deep into the empty zone once... got 364km and filled up with 53.7 litres! So I had only about 1.3 litres left assuming the 55 Litre tank size!

I drove 3,655 km from Melbourne to Perth... mudflap mod (see another thread) worked a treat... no sign of any melting at all

Great experience... the '90' Defender tows with no issues at all. I hardly noticed the weight/size of my camper trailer behind me at all, 6th gear with no problems.

Once I get through my health condition, I am looking forward to doing some great trips around W.A...

Great news Pete. You should have a 60 ltr tank, so probably had 11 litres left. Good news about the mudflap mod as well, and hope you are getting over your health issues. Our van arrives sometime next month so hoping to tour a bit of wildflower area if it's not too late in September.
