MY13 Defender - Squeaky clutch pedal

    Hi Everyone,

I would like to have your opinions from some experts on this forum as I cant get resolution of this issue.

I get this annoying clutch pedal squeak every time I depress the clutch and for the fourth time the dealer has lubricated the clutch box as recent as 4 weeks ago. it now appears when the weather is hot (Melbourne) and not in cool conditions.

I don't think that their solution is working, it must me something more than lubricating the box.
My suspicion is that it could be the seals are gone.
    Any opinions will be appreciated.

PS the car is still under warranty.

The double acting torsion spring that returns the pedal has a couple of plastic bushes where it goes through the holes in the pedal, try some oil or grease (WD40 or CRC wont do) on them.
The only other place is the main pivot point bushes below the master cylinder.
You need to take the inspection plate off the clutch pedal assembly (6 screws) under the bonnet but it sounds like they may have already tried that.
Careful if you go in there, you don't want any lubricants contaminating the M/C or the push rod.

Even those bushes really need oil or grease as the good old squirt of wd40 will only last a short time.

Highly unlikely that the seals are gone, you would have a puddle on the floor and no or little clutch pedal

    Cheers,
    Paul.

I've discovered after three+ years of this, lubricating the top pivot point inside the top of the box, that is, where the clutch pin pushes/rotates, fixes the problem.
I used WD40 on mine, but if and when I have to do it again, I will use Lanotec or something similar.

I don't think the larger pedal pivot is actually the issue, well at least it wasn't on mine anyway. Although, having said that, I'm sure if done at the same time would make it better anyway.

Liberal spray of WD40 from the top and bottom onto the pivot sorted out mine
I believe there was a modification on here somewhere involving insertion of a grease nipple. I cant remember the details but WD 40 worked for me.

I might suggest some of your diagnosis to the dealer in January and hopefully will get it fixed. Thanks for your advice.

I had this feature on Bear...

Someone at the dealer called it the "clutch alarm" after I'd pointed it out....

They fixed it and (looks for real wood to touch) 2 years and I havent heard it again (on mine )

there is a lot of mentions across the forum but in 2007 there was this one
(with advice from JustinC amongst others) it mirrors advice already given.... (except the cooking bit)

    a decent search should help..

I will need to have a look as I don't have an appreciation how easy it is to get access. Is it accessible from engine bay or from under the car?

Engine bay, beside the brake booster you will see the clutch M/C fluid reservoir. In front of that is a steel plate fixed with 6 screws.
Remove the plate and you with will see the trunnion which is the pivot point for the push rod that goes into the M/C.
A couple of nuts on the M/C side of the rod and a nylock on the other side.
Give it a lube and see what happens, maybe even get someone to pump the clutch pedal while you lube it.

Good Luck, hope it shuts the squeak up

Mine was in and out of LR (within warranty) for clutch pedal noises. None of the above lube points worked for me.

    Here's the cause/remedy:

    Hope this helps
