2.4 Tdci on its last leg ?

Good evening, long time since I visited this forum, guess to busy fixing Landys of all sorts.
One of my customers got me this nutcase to sort out for a x-mas present

Anyone with the same engine noise out there

    Defender 2007, stock standard, 214 000km
Oil pressure ok, crank case pressure ok, slightly more pressure in coolant system than others
    Serviced regularly

Can't wait to hear what others think

Sounds like either bottom end bearing rattle or a crook injector?

    2 problems I can see:
Steering wheel is on the wrong side.
No defender wave as you drove past.

Other than that it does sound crook

I had a similar noise on an old troopy , it has spun a little end. Oil pressure was fine and apart the noise it ran fine so it is a possibility. Check the injectors though as a faulty injector can make a horrible din.

It cant be bottom end or you would have lost oil pressure by now and it would be a heavier knock. I would be checking injectors first, I have not worked on a Puma yet but MANY other diesels. If possible disconnect one injector at a time see it the noise goes away. If injectors are fine I would be doing a compression test just to eliminate cracked pistons or dropped valves. If all good ie not injector and compression good it has to be a little end or something deeper in, cant think what else it could be though..

It's a bit hard to tell by listening to the video. Is it definitely a mechanical knock? Could it be as simple as a loose exhaust manifold both choofing and rattling?

So, is the noise there at idle?

If not, can you duplicate the noise whilst stationary?

An old piece of garden hose, (stethoscope) in an ear the other end against the cylinder head then down to the engine block may assist in location if you can duplicate the noise whilst stationary.

Figure the injector noise would show up more at the top end than a dudgeon (small end).

    It may help

Defender wave, the Ninety I drove past is another half dead one, but that is another story
