its a reciprocating or rotary compressor ? If its a recip' its probably old and due for a birthday or replacement. Rotary piston should not make any noise.
I have the original a/c setup and the compressor rattle and bangs like crazy. When I had it regased the technician said the old ones do rattle a lot. Also noticed that it draws heavily on rpm when switched on.
Q: are these units always rattley?
Q: can they be rebuilt or have worn internals that I can access? Sounds like bearings are shot.
For the paltry amount of difference the a/c makes, it's more trouble than it's worth, but in true Land Rover enthusiast fashion, keen to fix it if possible.

The ac unit is an original RRC York compressor. Does anyone know if these compressors are serviceable... I.e., is there a rebuild kit available?
I am guessing the knocking comes from a worn bearing as it still works ok. The local ac bloke has given me a contact for a new one, but as always, would rather fix my existing unit if viable.
