Thread: Fitting extra 12v sockets in back of defender

Hi , I've fitted two points in the rear of my 110 . One was a lighter point , the other was a jack type plug . I put them in the plastic speaker case . I drilled a holes using a spade bit . It cut a lovely neat holes .I also drilled a new hole through the tub , right at the back , and put the new live wires from underneath . I used the back of the door hinge bolt for the earth , It all works fine . Leave plenty of wire , so you can maneuver in the back of the speakers !!.. I hope this helps . Jim ..

Thanks mate ...how these plugs secure into the drill holes ....ie ...do they somehow snap in with lugs .....just push in tight .....or do you need to glue them in .......just don't want them working their way out when I get on some corrugations ........

There are a few different types of setsups.
Some are held with 2 screws/nuts while others have nuts on the rear.

I've fitted merit plugs to mine.

Once I they are sliden into the hole a nut holds it in place from the rear.

Your typical Narva style cigarette socket style plug uses a large plastic nut on the rear also.
I think it's safe to say that as long as you don't have incredible weight IN the socket, and you follow the manufacturers installation method, you should be fine.
For everything else there's araldyte or simple hard-wired connections

Most come in two pieces , an inner , and outer case ,with back nuts depending on the size , find the right cutting bit or hole saw , you can always file a bit out in the hole is to small . I didn't need any glue , they are a nice tight fit !!.. Jim

Thanks for this picture you put up alien , this is the same socket that I have , plus the standard lighter socket as well !!..Jim

I tend to use the standard 12V outlets on customers vehicles over the merit plug as I have found with age the merit plug seems to get a bit fiddly with its connection.

The first pic is the rear of a Defender, mounted in the side window recess as it doesnt stick out into the cargo area and isnt prone to getting damaged. Each 12V socket has a threaded ring that fixes it to the mounting plate.

The second pic is an older style that uses screws or bolts to attach it to a surface. (has two USB adapters plugged in).
