Location, even in general terms of north, south or western Brisbane might help.
It's a big city.
Is there anyone in Brisbane who would like to teach me a few of the basics about minor servicing? I'm keen to learn about the engine and other parts. Of course I would like to save money too. More importantly, I'd like to have some mechanical skills for when I'm far from home.
I have a TD5 110 but I have virtually no mechanical experience. Having said that I'm not too gumby and should be able to pick things up quickly.
If you're happy to pass on some knowledge I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I can show you how to maintain the driveline etc, but I dont / haven't done td5 engines.
We have a transfer case swap coming up shortly in a 300 tdi 110 if your interested.
Then an auto conversion for a 110 300tdi in a few months.
Cheers,
Tony

basic maintenance is easier than a tdi, baring 2 filters for the oil.
no timing belt and no lash adjustment on the valves.
serpentine belt is the same concept as the tdi just longer and more fiddly, timing case bearing mount for the fan is the same concept, iders and tensioner ditto, alternator has the vac pump on the back of it and you have more interesting hose routing but hose maintenance stays the same, MAF+MAP care as per V8i(any) and the FPR layout. plenty of howto threads on here on dealing with that. few more electrical plugs.
harmonic balancer needs a tighter eye kept on it than the TDI, and the mounts are just fractionally harder to check for condition.
oh the secret hidden heater hose, never forget the secret hidden heater hose.
