Exclamation New puma leak - No Surprise

    G'day,

Picked up my new Defender last week and I had a good look underneath for the obligatory leak (almost would have been worried there wasn't at least 1.) The pic is of the junction between the g-box and transfer case.

Any ideas of what seal has gone? From the color I though it might be transfer case oil.

    Thoughts?

Excess grease escaping from the coupling splines? I will be happy to see that on mine when I get it.

I hope so too, seemed to have the viscosity of oil though =(

Gave it a good wipe down so will give it a looking over again after I take it for a good run. It's the same color as the penrite gear oil I used on my 110 couple months back.

Get that seen to. It is a main gearbox rear seal issue not a transfer case seal issue. The coupling may have even come loose 😮😮
Is this a NEW vehicle or used? The colour of that oil isn't normal BOT328 i wonder if they have changed it again?

Alec, There are lots of new Defender's producing this blue grease. Mine was there from very low kms, wiped off & has not returned since. Over on Defender2 this is a long thread on this issue. I would guess that it is some sort of assembly fluid. Here was mine before:

Good news then. Of course after almost 10 years they had started to prelube the coupling so they can be forgiven for a little seepage...😕

    Thanks,

Yeah I thought I would give it a wipe and see if it returned and in greater numbers initially. Will forward pic to local service guy's and see what they think aswell for some security.

It hasnt been enough to actually drop onto the tarmac where it's parked so hopefully that's what it is. Viscosity is somewhere between oil and grease which made me think it might have been transfer fluid. On further inspection its almost kind of sticky has a faint scent of glue about it. Did not taste it though!

Will be keeping an eye on it. This forum has proven its worth yet again!

Some of the UK vehicles have marked their territory. Mine never did, just dripped onto the exhaust & I guess evaporated! I'm up near 4000kms now & fingers, legs & anything else that will cross - the fluids all seem to be behaving & staying where they are supposed to - it hasn't rained yet though!
